THE LYNCHBURG FEDERAL ART GALLERY PAPERS
The collection includes minutes of meetings, notices about exhibits, newspaper
clippings, and other items. The Lynchburg Federal Art Gallery was established in 1936
by the Virginia Art Project, Works Progress Administration and was supported locally by
the Lynchburg Art Alliance.
LYNCHBURG FEDERAL ART GALLERY
The Lynchburg Federal Art Gallery opened in October 1936. The movement to
establish this art center for the training of local artists was supported by the Lynchburg
Civic Art League, the Lynchburg Art Club, Lynchburg College, and Randolph-Macon
Woman's College. The original proposal called for the hiring of ten instructors to teach
fine arts and commercial arts. With the approval of the city council, the gallery opened at
506-508 Main Street, in a building donated by Stephen P. Halsey. In 1937, the Gallery
was moved to Peakland School on Oak Lane, where it remained until it was closed ca.
1942. At one time, the Lynchburg Federal Art Gallery was the largest unit of the federal
art project in Virginia.
[The Lynchburg Federal Art Gallery Papers, Mss., MS2078, Jones Memorial Library, Lynchburg, VA.]
LYNCHBURG ART ALLIANCE
The Lynchburg Art Alliance was formed for the purpose of creating a permanent art
center for the city with the aid of the Virginia Art Project of the Works Progress
Administration. Among its other goals, the Alliance sought to establish an art center and
gallery, the establish permanent collections in the city, to promote local art talent, and to
establish a society of artists in Art, Drama, Music, History, and Civics.

THE MARTHA RIVERS ADAMS (1882-1959) COLLECTION
This microfilmed collection includes Civil War records, correspondence, financial
documents, land records, ledgers, legal documents, lists, maps, obituaries, photographs,
poetry, receipts, and scrapbooks of the RIVERS, PAINE, ABERNATHY, and BROWN
families of Giles County, Tennessee. The collection was originally assembled by Martha
Rivers ADAMS, a historian and writer of a column for the Lynchburg (Va.) News and
the Daily Advance.
MARTHA RIVERS ADAMS (1882-1959)
Martha RIVERS, daughter of James W. RIVERS and Mary FLOURNOY, was born
10 November 1882 at Conway, Giles County, Tennessee. She was graduated from
Athens College, Athens, Alabama, and from Martin College, Pulaski, Tennessee. She
also attended Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia, for two years,
a member of the class of 1904. On 12 January 1904, Martha RIVERS married William
Duval ADAMS, Jr., son of William Duval ADAMS and Elizabeth Victorine MULLAN,
of Lynchburg.
Martha Rivers ADAMS was employed by The News of Lynchburg, first as a
substitute for the society editors. During a career that spanned 45 years at the newspaper,
she worked in almost every department as a reporter, covering courts, municipal offices,
and "activities of military units and individuals during and after World War I." She also
reported on numerous groups, "including all women's organizations." She eventually
became Women's Editor of The News.
In 1951, Martha Rivers ADAMS began a weekly column entitled "Browsings." This
column covered a variety of topics, but concentrated on local history. The column
continued until her death in 1959.
Martha Rivers ADAMS was a director of the Travelers Aid Society from 1914 until
1950. She was an honorary member of the Woman's Club of Lynchburg, a member of
Kirkwood Otey Chapter, UDC, and a member of the Lynchburg Art Club. She died 28
June 1959 and was buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg.

NEW LONDON ACADEMY
The oldest secondary school in Virginia, New London Academy was chartered by the
General Assembly in 1795. It first operated as a private classical school for young men.
Francis EPPES, a nephew of Thomas JEFFERSON, was a student at the Academy. In
1879, the school became coeducational.
Although originally funded by local subscription, a lottery was held in 1797 to raise
money to erect buildings and to establish a permanent fund for the support of the
Academy. Lotteries were held for fifty years for the Academy and were its chief source
of revenue.
In 1887 the Academy became part of the public school system. In 1892, the Academy
held the first specialized summer training school for teachers in Virginia. In 1910, the
Academy was the first to offer classes in agriculture and home economics. The Academy
was eventually changed to an elementary school in 1964.
In 1971, the Academy was named a historic landmark and was placed on the Virginia
Historic Register. In 1972, it was placed on the National Historic Register. The oldest
remaining building of the Academy was constructed ca. 1837 and was restored by a grant
from the General Assembly of Virginia.

NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA
CEMETERY SURVEY
The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America conducted a survey of old
cemeteries in twenty-two states between 1966 and 1976. This compilation consists of
reports of work done, newspaper articles and other publications about the cemeteries,
photographs, correspondence, etc., all organized by state. Mary Burnley Wilson
EDMUNDS of Lynchburg, Virginia, compiled this document.
NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA
The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America was founded in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, in 1891. Its members were those women who were lineal descendants of
ancestors in the American colonies before 1750 and who rendered service either in the
founding of a colony or of an institution in the colonies, or who held office in colonial
government. Among its objectives, the Colonial Dames seeks to collect and preserve
manuscript materials, to preserve and restore buildings from the colonial era, and to
create interest in colonial history. In 1966, the Colonial Dames began a cemetery survey,
a national project to locate and restore cemeteries, to copy inscriptions, and to write
articles concerning the cemeteries for publication. The project ended in 1976, but local
committees were encouraged to continue the project on the local level.

JONES MEMORIAL LIBRARY
2311 MEMORIAL AVENUE
LYNCHBURG, VA 24501
(434) 846-0501
LETTER FROM WILL TO MA, 1864
The letter is from Will, on picket near Bermuda Hundred [VA], 9 Aug. 1864, to his
mother, name & place unknown. He lists clothing left behind in Richmond and mentions
washing clothes and buying vegetables. He further tells of hearing the explosion of a
torpedo in the James River while writing this letter.
A Charles Hamner is mentioned as receiving a food box from home which he shared
with Will. Charles Daniel Hamner, a Lynchburg resident, was a lieutenant in Company
G of the 11th Virginia Infantry at the time of the writing of the letter.
Will mentions in the letter that his mother is to send future mail to Terry's Brigade,
rather than Kemper's. During the time that the 11th Virginia was encamped at Bermuda
Hundred, William R. Terry was promoted to brigade commander.
The letter was written in pencil. A typescript copy of the letter is included.

On Picket Near Bermuda Hund
August 19th, 1864
Dear Ma
I received your letter of 5th on yesterday and hasten to reply to show you how much it
is appreciated. It is the first real long letter I have received from you for a long, long
time, and I assure you that it gives me the greatest pleasure imaginable to get such.
The author you quote from in reference to a soldier's hardships is entirely mistaken
when he says they receive the merest pittance in return. The fact that he is doing his duty
to his country is in itself sufficient pay, and then these privations are made pleasures then
he knows that they are for those he loves better than self and that they love and honour
him the more for it. --and again, in your letter you seem to think -- after reading William
Milton -- that you have in some way neglected to bring up us children in the proper
manner. You should not do so. You have done your duty in the sight of God and if the
tree (as they often with the best of training do, but I pray Heaven we may prove
exceptions) should prove knotted and bent, it is no fault of yours but their own, and God
alone thro their hearts can make them straight.
You wish to know what clothing I left in Richmond. I left 1 Grey Jacket, 1 pr. Blue
pants, 1 Calico & 1 Marsailes Bossom shirt, 2 pr. Socks & 2 pr. drawers, 2 Collars & 2
cravat with a little paper of those buttons that Jim sold me in the bottom drawer of the
beaureau up stairs in the room for guests, and 1 Black Jacket, 1 pr. Grey pants, drawers, 1
shirt (cotton) and some smoking tobacco in a Knapsack with my overcoat & Blanket
thrown over it in the next room (the one with the blue furniture). I drew forty-four (44)
dollars from the Gov't. the other day, but have loaned all out that I have not spent and that
was very little. I have to pay 50 cts. a piece for washing down here and it is such a dirty
place that it counts up pretty fast, besides the vegetables I buy are not as cheap as they
might be, but I can scarcely do without them and keep the health.
I am surprised that Miss T is just cutting her wisdom teeth -- why I feel almost old
enough for my heirs to cut theirs (not wisdom). You had better deputize Sue to tell her
this and it may remove one impediment that is now in my way to supreme felicity. That
is the difference in our ages and by-the-by, I reckon I will have to drop Missie & yourself
as correspondents & write to Nell and Sue as they could & would tell me more than she
does & says concerning her "galliant louvier," -- even Kate Selden tells me more (thro
Chas. Hamner) of her (T's) incomings and outgoings. She says that T. has turned her
affections Northward and ceased to think of the once happy soldier, is this true? Must I
commit suicide or --or shave? No, I won't believe it till I get (what the Examiner calls)
authentick information.
Just then, as I wrote there was a tremendous explosion in our front -- suppose it to be
the bursting of a torpedo in the James River -- don't know tho, it may be most anything.
It is of not much consequence I reckon or rather serious result on our side or they would
be cheering like mad.
MS2064
I forgot to tell you that I also left a pair of Scotch satin shoes with my other things in
R. Ed may have taken some of this clothing and if anything is missing you had better
write to him to know if he has it. save those pants that you spoke of. I am under many
obligations to you for them.
Give my love to my uncle Joe(?), Miss T
and tell them to make haste and recover,
also to the rest of the family especially Aunt Poll and Nell, but excepting the greatest
share for yourself, believe me as ever.
Your devoted Son,
Will
Direct your letters as here before with the exeption of Kemper's Brigade, instead put
Terry's as he has now been promoted to the this place.
Write soon another long letter and tell me all that is going on in L. Give my love to all
at Grandma's the next time you have an opportunity.
[on the back was written the following:]
Chas. Hamner got a box from home yesterday and we had one of the best dinners you
ever saw.

PETITION FOR EDMUND & DOROTHEA WINSTON, 1817
This is a portion of a petition filed by attorneys Leigh & Anthony on behalf of the
Winstons in a case against the executors of Patrick Henry's estate. Mrs. Dorothea
Dandridge Henry Winston was Patrick Henry's widow, and Fayette [LaFayette] Henry,
their son, had been Mrs. Winston's agent in the management of her interests in the
settlement of the Henry estate.
Patrick Henry had died on 6 June 1799, and his will stipulated that his wife, Dorothea,
would forfeit her inheritance should she remarry. She violated the will with her marriage
to Judge Edmund Winston on 11 June 1802, which brought on a lawsuit and delayed
probation of the will.
DOROTHEA DANDRIDGE HENRY WINSTON
Dorothea Dandridge was the daughter of Nathaniel West Dandridge of Hanover, and
the granddaughter of Gov. Alexander Spotswood. She married Patrick Henry 9 October
1777, at Scotchtown, while Henry was Governor of Virginia. The Henrys resided there
while the Capitol was being renovated. Following the death of Patrick Henry, Dorothea
married Judge Edmund Winston in 1802.

Delaware, 19 May 1865, thanking her for clothes and looking forward to his release.
Hanly may have been from Alabama, as he also inquired about the condition of an
Alabama soldier who was in a hospital in DC.
