FORTNIGHTLY CLUB MINUTES BOOK
The collection consists of a minute book for the Fortnightly Club, a literary and social
club of Lynchburg, Virginia. The Club, organized on 16 December 1890, held regular
sessions at which an original essay was presented, along with readings and recitations,
and a symposium for the discussion of various subjects. Membership was limited to 99
persons, although the recorded minutes do not indicate such a large membership.
Although the minutes end with the session of 5 April 1892, the Club continued to meet
for a period of time.

GEORGE WILLIAM THORNHILL (1828-1893)
George William Thornhill, son of Joshua T. Thornhill and Judith Reveley, was born in
Campbell County, near Concord Depot, 27 June 1828. After graduating from the medical
department of the University of Virginia in 1847, he began his medical practice at Campbell
Courthouse (now Rustburg, Virginia) in 1851.
On 16 November 1854, George W. Thornhill married Cornelia Lucy Bibb, daughter of
William A. Bibb and Sarah Bramham of Albemarle County, Virginia. They moved to Concord
Depot in 1855 where he remained until 1861. During the Civil War, he served as surgeon of the
11th Virginia Regiment of Infantry for one year and was then transferred to the hospitals in
Lynchburg and cared for large numbers of sick and wounded soldiers. After the war, he returned
to his farm at Concord Depot and resumed the practice of medicine.
In May, 1874, Dr. Thornhill moved to Lynchburg and was associated with Dr. D. E.
Bass, who had come from Campbell Court House for that purpose. Following the death of Dr.
Bass in 1886, Dr. Thornhill continued his medical practice until his death on 6 January 1893. He
was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg.

GETHSEMANE BAPTIST CHURCH (MADISON HEIGHTS, VA)
MINUTE BOOK
The minute book includes a brief history of the formation of the church as well as
minutes of church activities and membership lists 1874-1892. Later entries for 19321933 are brief reports of offerings.
GETHSEMANE BAPTIST CHURCH (MADISON HEIGHTS, VA)
Gethsemane Baptist Church was organized in 1874 with ten members,
including its pastor, John Thornton Rhodes. Ordained a minister of the Baptist Church in
Amherst County, Va. in 1866, Rhodes became pastor of Beulah Baptist Church in
Amherst County. When that church "ceased to exist," he organized Gethsemane Baptist
Church. After his death in 1895, members may have worshipped at other churches.
When Oakdale Baptist Church was established in 1910, many of the members of
Gethsemane Baptist may have moved to Oakdale. This would explain the minute book
being found with the records of Oakdale Baptist Church.

RIVERMONT STREET RAILWAY COMPANY MINUTE BOOK
The minute book records the general operations of the company involved with
purchases of land and maintenance of equipment and powerhouse. The accompanying
pamphlet contains the act of incorporation (1891), a deed of trust for the company to
Lynchburg Trust and Savings Bank, and a statement of assets and balance sheet (1892).
RIVERMONT STREET RAILWAY COMPANY
Facing financial difficulties in 1891, the Rivermont Land Company
divested itself of its streetcar system which was reorganized and renamed the Lynchburg
and Rivermont Street Railway Company. The Company was incorporated Dec. 17, 1891
“to construct, own, purchase, hold and operate a street railway in the counties of
Campbell and Bedford and in the city of Lynchburg.” The capital stock of the company
was not to exceed $200,000. As the Company expanded its streetcar system from its
original Rivermont route through the city of Lynchburg, the name was changed to The
Lynchburg and Rivermont Street Railway Company on March 24, 1892. The corporate
name was again changed to Lynchburg Traction and Light Company on April 30, 1901.
