NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA
CEMETERY SURVEY
The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America conducted a survey of old
cemeteries in twenty-two states between 1966 and 1976. This compilation consists of
reports of work done, newspaper articles and other publications about the cemeteries,
photographs, correspondence, etc., all organized by state. Mary Burnley Wilson
EDMUNDS of Lynchburg, Virginia, compiled this document.
NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA
The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America was founded in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, in 1891. Its members were those women who were lineal descendants of
ancestors in the American colonies before 1750 and who rendered service either in the
founding of a colony or of an institution in the colonies, or who held office in colonial
government. Among its objectives, the Colonial Dames seeks to collect and preserve
manuscript materials, to preserve and restore buildings from the colonial era, and to
create interest in colonial history. In 1966, the Colonial Dames began a cemetery survey,
a national project to locate and restore cemeteries, to copy inscriptions, and to write
articles concerning the cemeteries for publication. The project ended in 1976, but local
committees were encouraged to continue the project on the local level.
