HOLY TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA
“An attempt was made to organize a Lutheran Church in Lynchburg as early as
1856. However, the Civil War ended this initial effort. Two other attempts were made
after the Civil War, but it was not until 1902 that a successful organization was begun.
“William Woody Manley and John Alexander Weinel visited other Lutherans
living in Lynchburg and the first worship service was held in the YMCA on October 12,
1902. The congregation was officially organized with twenty-eight members on April
12, 1903.
“Holy Trinity’s first house of worship was dedicated on June 16, 1907. It is still
standing at 420 Victoria Avenue and was used from 1907 until 1922.
“From 1922 until 1954, the congregation was located at 1018 Rivermont Avenue
in the building formerly used by the Rivermont Methodist Church.
“On January 25, 1953, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the present
church building located at 1000 Langhorne Road. The building was dedicated in 1954.
“The church was designed by Lynchburg architect S. Preston Craighill. The
building is of modified Gothic architecture and is made of native Lynchburg greenstone.”
