ABRAHAM K. HANNA (1826-1864) LETTERS
The letters were written in July and August 1864 from the Ladies Relief Hospital
in Lynchburg, Virginia. A.K. Hanna was wounded in the Battle of Lynchburg and was
treated at the hospital until his death 13 August 1864. The first two letters were dictated
to his West Virginia comrade, J.M.B. Walkup. The third letter and postscript were written
by Mrs. Lucy Wilhelmina Otey, who directed the work of the hospital, informing Mrs.
Elizabeth A. Hanna of the death of her husband.
ABRAHAM K. HANNA (1826-1864)
Abraham K. Hanna was born circa 1826, the son of Andrew & Eliza Kerns Hanna
of Greenbrier County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Ann McMillion, also of Greenbrier
County, 13 October 1851.
Mr. Hanna enlisted at Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, Virginia, 21 April 1862 and
served in the 14th Virginia Cavalry, Company A. He was wounded in the Battle of
Lynchburg 17 June 1864. As a result, his foot was amputated and the resulting weakness
caused his death on 13 August 1864. He was buried in the Lynchburg City Cemetery,
Row 2, Grave 9.

LUCY WILHELMINA NORVELL OTEY (1801-1867)
Lucy Wilhelmina Norvell was born 28 February 1801, the daughter of William &
Ann Wiatt Norvell. She married John Mathews Otey, son of Isaac & Elizabeth Matthews
Otey, on 10 December 1817 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Mrs. Otey was founder and President of the Ladies Relief Hospital in Lynchburg,
Virginia during the Civil War. She directed the work of the hospital throughout the war
and assisted in giving aid and comfort to the wounded sent there. She died on 23 May
1867 in Richmond, Virginia and was buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg,
Virginia.

�JOHN MC.B. WALKUP
John Mc. B. Walkup was born about 1823, the son of John & Margaret R.
Walkup. He resided in Greenbrier County, Virginia, in 1860. He enlisted in the
Confederate Army 15 September 1863. He was wounded in action at the Battle of
Lynchburg and was taken to the Ladies Relief Hospital. He returned to Greenbrier
County after the war and died there 30 December 1891.

Collection of letters written by Abraham K. Hanna (1926-1864) to his wife Elizabeth A. Hanna following the Battle of Lynchburg in June 1864.
Hanna was wounded and his foot amputated; he subsequently died of his injuries on 13 August 1864 and was buried in the City Cemetery in Lynchburg.
Included in this collection are:
