Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, South was organized in 1884, as an outgrowth
of the Court St. M.E. Church, South. Eighty-nine members transferred, and the new
church was dedicated in December of 1884. It was located on the corner of Floyd and
9th Streets, Lynchburg, Virginia.
On December 30, 1983, a fire destroyed the sanctuary, and the congregation merged
with the Brookville United Methodist Church to form the Heritage United Methodist

LYNCHBURG MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION
The Lynchburg Ministerial Association was organized on 5 January 1918 as the
Ministerial Union of Lynchburg, Virginia. The purpose of the organization was for “the
promotion of Christian fellowship among the ministers of Lynchburg and vicinity, the
consideration of questions of moral and religious interest, and the prosecution of plans
which shall be adopted for the advancement of the Christian religion in this community.”
The Association name was changed in 1935 to the Evangelical Ministerial Association of
Lynchburg, Virginia and in 1949 to the Lynchburg Ministerial Association. In addition
to interdenominational cooperation, the clergy of the Association were involved in social
issues such as temperance, censorship and Sunday legislation (blue laws).
In 1967, the Association undertook the planning, financing and construction of a
clinic building in Sandy Bay, Nicaragua, as an extension of the Gray Memorial Hospital
in Puerto Cabeza. The clinic was a mission of the Moravian Church and the Lynchburg
Ministerial Association agreed to support the effort. In addition to money raised toward
the construction cost, the Association encouraged active community support in this effort.
Medical equipment, clinic furniture, and other necessary items were donated by
Lynchburg physicians.

minister of the Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church until 1936. In that year, Mr.

JANE DOUGLAS (SUMMERS) BROWN (1903-2007)
Obituary, Lynchburg News & Advance, 19 July 2007
Jane Douglas Summers Brown, a resident of Westminster Canterbury, died
Friday, July 13, 2007, at the age of 104.
She was born Jan. 10, 1903, in Abingdon. She was a daughter of the noted lawyer
and historian, Lewis Preston Summers of Abingdon and his wife, Anne Katherine
Barbee, of White Gate, Giles County.
Douglas Brown's early education was by private tutors and in private schools
connected to the two colleges in Abingdon, Stone Wall Jackson Institute and Martha
Washington College. She graduated from the local William King High School and later
from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton in 1923.
Following graduation she spent the summer of 1923 touring Scandinavia, the
British Isles and Western Europe. The following three years she spent teaching high
school in Covington, and Lancaster County.
In 1926, she married Henry Dockery Brown Jr., of Wilson, N.C. At the time, he
was completing his preparation for the Presbyterian Ministry at the Theological Seminary
in Richmond. While he continued his studies there, she spent the following years as a
volunteer in her husband's several churches, as a trained Christian church worker. Her
major endeavor was in the work of the Women of the Church, where her main interest
lay. In time, she served as president of the Women of the Church of Bethel Presbytery in
South Carolina and Savannah Presbytery in Georgia. She taught Bible in the local
churches and in later years ecumenical places in the cities in which they lived. She also
served as "Mistress of the Manse" in Lynchburg, Richmond, and Emporia, as well as
Rock Hill, S.C. and Waycross, Ga. She was a charter member of her chapter of The
Daughters of The American Revolution. She was a member of Quaker Memorial
Presbyterian Church.
"Douglas" began her early writing for church publications, including The Out
Look, The Survey, and The Christian Endeavor. Lynchburg's Pioneer Quakers was her
first history book, now in its third printing. It was her introduction to writing local
histories. Over the years, she wrote five books on local history, four of which have been
reprinted. Her book on the Catawba Indians was printed by the University of South
Carolina Press and pronounced one of its most notable books published by them over the
past 25 years. She also wrote a number of articles for magazines such as The Virginia
MS1515
Cavalcade, The Sandlapper (S.C.), The North Caolina Magazine, Lynch's Ferry, and
others.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her two sons,
Henry Dockery Brown III, of Lowell, Mass. and Lewis Summers Brown, of Lynchburg.
She is survived by her sister Olivia Dutcher of Neptune, N.J.; her daughter-in-law
Helen J. Brown, of Lowell, Mass.; her six grandchildren, Barbara J. Brown, Marcia D.
Maxfield, Bonnie M. Finneran, Henry D. Brown IV, David R. Brown, and Donna
Mendonca; as well as seven great- grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted by Dr. Corey Ingold in Quaker Memorial
Presbyterian Church at 12 noon on Thursday, July 19, 2007. Interment will follow in the
church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Quaker Memorial Presbyterian
Church, 5810 Fort Ave. Lynchburg, Va. 24502.
Diuguid Wiggington Chapel is serving the family, (434) 385-8900.

THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA
The First United Methodist Church was formed in 1828 from the Third Street
Methodist Meeting, when several members of Third Street adopted the principles of the
reform movement that was sweeping through the Methodist Church. The new church
was first known as the Associated Methodist Church, and later as Wesley Chapel. In
1831, the church united with the Virginia Conference of the Methodist Protestant Church
and became known as First Methodist Protestant Church. Following the disbandment of
the Virginia Conference in 1874, First Methodist Protestant Church was admitted to the
Maryland Conference.
Following a denominational merger in 1939, the First Methodist Protestant Church
joined the Virginia Annual Conference of the Methodist Church and was known as First
Methodist Church.
In 1995, First United Methodist Church merged with Chestnut Hill United Methodist
Church.
The church was located on Church Street until 1952, when it was relocated to the
former building of the First Presbyterian Church at Ninth and Court Streets, where it
remained until its merger with the Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church.
Other churches formed from the First United Methodist Church include: Durmid
Methodist Church (now Fairview United Methodist Church)(1907); and Second

METHODIST ASSOCIATED CHURCH PAPERS
The collection includes minutes of meetings of the Methodist Associated Church's
governing society. This group was begun by Methodists expelled from the Methodist
Episcopal Church because of differences concerning the leadership. In the back is a list
of members of the church. Lying loosely in the volume is what is probably part of a
sermon. There are also letters (1825-1828) about lay representation in church affairs,
which was the cause of the 1828 expulsion. This was the beginning of the Methodist
Protestant Church which existed as a separate entity until reuniting with the Methodist
Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in forming The Methodist
Church in 1939.

The collection includes three Ascension Day service bulletins (1896, 1897, 1899) for the
DeMolay Commandery, No. 4, Knights Templar, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Lynchburg,
Virginia. Traditionally, members of the DeMolay Commandery were invited to participate in
Ascension Day services in the church. Sermons were given by the pastor of the church or by a
member of the Commandery.
The DeMolay Commandery, No. 4, was chartered by the Grand Encampment, Knights
Templar, of Virginia in 1826, as the Lynchburg Encampment. The name was later changed to
DeMolay Encampment until 1856 when the name DeMolay Commandery was used.

AN APPEAL TO THE CONGREGATION (1887)
The vestry of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Lynchburg, issued an appeal for funding of a
new church building. Originally, the church met in the Masonic Hall. Later, a separate building
for the church was erected on land donated by Mrs. George Cabell. The congregation outgrew
the building and the present lot (1887) was purchased from John F. Slaughter.
The appeal is issued with Historical Sketch of St. Paul’s Church by C.M.B. (Charles
Minor Blackford).

QUAKER MEMORIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church had its beginning in a Sunday school for
neighborhood children established by Emily Rowse LOGAN, who lived near the ruins of
the Quaker Meeting House. At first, she met with the children in her home. When
attendance in the Sunday school grew, Mrs. LOGAN sought the assistance of Rev. J. A.
McMURRAY, pastor of the Floyd Street Presbyterian Church. They received permission
to use a schoolhouse that had been moved to the Meeting House property. Attendance
continued to grow and additional property was sought for a larger Sunday school.
Dr. John J. TERRELL, one of the last remaining Quakers in the area, assisted Rev.
McMURRAY in securing the Meeting House property from the Richmond Meeting,
Society of Friends, for $25.00 in 1899. The congregation immediately set about to
restore the abandoned Meeting House. "The completed and restored church was
dedicated October 2, 1904. The present walls are the original ones, other portions,
including roof and interior furnishings are new."
"In May 1910, the church was organized and accepted by Montgomery Presbytery. It
was given the name, 'Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church.'" The Church erected a
building for its Church School in 1943 and, in 1950, completed the present sanctuary. In
1951, the congregation decided to preserve the old Meeting House and adjoining
cemetery as "an historical shrine," in honor of the original Quaker congregation.

Church Collection, Mss., MS1280, Jones Memorial Library, Lynchburg, VA.]

ST. STEPHEN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, FOREST, VIRGINIA
St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and Trinity Episcopal Church, Russell Parish, were
formed ca. 1824 by Rev. Nicholas Hamner COBBS.
St. Stephens's was built on land originally part of the Poplar Forest tract, owned by
Thomas JEFFERSON. The original brick church was torn down and "the present Church
built about 1844 in its place." In 1846, St. Stephen's Church was separated from Trinity
Church and became Hamner Parish.
"At a Vestry meeting of March 26, 1911, it was ordered that the congregation be
notified that there was debt resting upon the Church and subscriptions should be solicited
to pay the same and repair the Church." Although the Church had been active from its
beginning in 1824, it was closed from 1911 until 1941, with only occasional services
held.
St. Stephen's Church has been active since its reopening in 1941.
