CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA BONDS
The collection includes one $1000 bond, No. 503, dated 8 October 1862, one $500
bond, No. 377, dated 8 October 1862, and one $1000 bond, No. 3051, dated 20 January
1862, all signed by Robert TYLER, Register of the Treasury.
ROBERT TYLER (1818-1877)
Robert TYLER, son of President John TYLER and Letitia CHRISTIAN, was born 9
September 1818 at Cedar Grove in New Kent County, Virginia. He was educated at the
College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, graduating in 1835. He received his law
degree from the same institution in 1837. He practiced law in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
and was active in politics, serving as chairman of the Democratic executive committee in
1858. He was also active in promoting the nominations of Franklin PIERCE in 1852 and
of James BUCHANAN in 1856.
Robert TYLER married Priscilla COOPER, daughter of Thomas A. COOPER, in
1839.
During the presidency of John TYLER, Robert TYLER served as signer of patents
and as the president's private secretary. In 1847, he was appointed sheriff's solicitor of
Philadelphia. Later he was appointed to the Office of the Prothonotary of the Supreme
Court of Pennsylvania.
When Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, Robert TYLER removed to
Richmond, Virginia, where he was appointed Register of the Treasury by President
Jefferson DAVIS in 1861, in the place of Alexander B. CLITHERALL, who had
resigned. TYLER served in that position throughout the war.
Following the Civil War, Robert TYLER moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where he
became editor of the Mail and Express, and was chairman of the Democratic state central
committee. He died 3 December 1877 in Montgomery.

OLD DOMINION CHAPTER, UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE
CONFEDERACY
In 1896, Ruth H. EARLY, a member of the Lucy Minor Otey Chapter, United
Daughters of the Confederacy (now the Kirkwood Otey Chapter, UDC), met with other
interested women and organized the Old Dominion Chapter, UDC, in Lynchburg,
Virginia. The group was chartered on 9 July 1896. Among the stated purposes of the
Chapter were the "caring for veterans, collecting and preserving relics of the war, and
perpetuating the memory of Confederate heroes by promoting friendship among their
relatives and survivors." The Chapter worked toward the erection of the soldier's
monument on Court Street and acquired the old fortifications, known as Fort Early, to
preserve a part of the war history of Lynchburg.

GARLAND-RODES CAMP (LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA)
Work began in June 1887 to establish a Confederate veteran's camp in Lynchburg,
Virginia. On 28 April 1888, the camp was organized as the Samuel GARLAND Camp,
United Confederate Veterans, Camp No. 8, Virginia Division, Camp No. 1521, United
Confederate Veterans. On 7 May 1894, the camp was renamed the GARLAND-RODES
Camp, United Confederate Veterans. The camp remained active for about forty years
and met for a number of years in the Camp Room in the Jones Memorial Library.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans was organized in 1896, under the auspices of the
United Confederate Veterans. The main objectives of the organization were to preserve
Southern history, to provide for the widows and orphans of veterans, to erect monuments
and memorials, and "to instill into our descendants a devotion to and reverence for the
principles represented by the Confederate States of America to the honor, glory and
memory of our fathers who fought in that cause."
The GARLAND-RODES Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans, was inactive for a
period. The charter for Camp No. 409 was reactivated in 1981 and the camp has been
quite active since that time.
