GARLAND FAMILY PAPERS
This microfilm collection contains the papers, 1762-1907 (bulk 1816-1857), of
the Garland family of Lynchburg, Virginia, particularly Samuel Garland and the law firm
of Samuel and Maurice H. Garland, and the mercantile firm of Garland & Roy. Includes
accounts, business records, correspondence, legal records, and deeds, primarily relating
to court cases, business dealings, the settlement of estates, and the purchasing of goods
and services. Also includes the business and personal correspondence of John B. Roy. Of
note is a letter from Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Garland, 4 August 1823, regarding the
payment of a debt from the proceeds of land deal in Bedford County, Virginia, and a
report on the Battle at Arkansas Post on 10-11 January 1863, written by Robert R.
Garland, Colonel of the 6th Texas Infantry. The last items on the reels are letters from
various Garland family members to Robert Alonzo Brock concerning the genealogy of
the Garland family.

GARLAND FAMILY COLLECTION
The collection contains copies of the wills of Samuel GARLAND and General Samuel
GARLAND, Jr., copies of court reports concerning the settlement of their estates, and a
research paper by Stephen J. GARLAND about General GARLAND. Also included are
journals and ledgers (1857-1866) of the law firm of GARLAND and SLAUGHTER, the
day books (1850-1863) of General GARLAND, and a journal (1859-1862) of Samuel
GARLAND, Sr. An account book (1845-1853) of the partnership of Samuel
GARLAND, Maurice H. GARLAND and George T. WILLIAMS, recording slave sales,
giving names and ages of the slaves, is also included.

SAMUEL GARLAND (1789-1861)
Samuel GARLAND, son of Rice GARLAND and Elizabeth HAMNER, was born 5
May 1789 in Albemarle County, Virginia. During the War of 1812, he served as a
Sergeant in an artillery company in Campbell County, Virginia, commanded by Captain
James DUNNINGTON. The company was stationed at Camp Holly, Virginia, from 22
March 1813 until 22 August 1813.
Samuel GARLAND married 26 August 1818 Mary Lightfoot ANDERSON, daughter
of Captain Jesse ANDERSON and Elizabeth West JONES, of Bedford County.
A lawyer by profession, Samuel GARLAND was also involved in other enterprises,
including a partnership in the tobacco trade with his brother, M. H. GARLAND, and
George T. WILLIAMS, tobacconist. The GARLAND brothers each put up $5,000 as
capital and WILLIAMS provided his services as his portion of the capital.
By the time of his death, Samuel GARLAND had amassed a sizeable estate in
Virginia and Mississippi, including over $400,000 in stocks and bonds in Virginia, and
three large cotton plantations in Mississippi: Tudor Hall and Barrens in Hinds County,
near Jackson, Mississippi, and a plantation in Coahoma County, Mississippi, on the
Mississippi River, just below Memphis, Tennessee.
Samuel GARLAND died 9 November 1861 at his plantation in Coahoma County,
Mississippi.

MAURICE HAMNER GARLAND (ca.1783-1840)
Maurice Hamner GARLAND, son of Rice GARLAND and Elizabeth HAMNER, was

Maurice H. GARLAND married 10 March 1830 Caroline Matilda GARLAND,
daughter of Alexander Spotswood GARLAND and Lucinda ROSE of Nelson County,
Virginia.
Maurice H. GARLAND was also involved in enterprises other than law, including a
partnership in the tobacco trade with his brother, Samuel GARLAND, and George T.
WILLIAMS, tobacconist. The GARLAND brothers each put up $5,000 as capital and
WILLIAMS provided his services as his portion of the capital.
Maurice H. GARLAND, a member of Marshall Lodge No. 39, A.F.& A.M. in
Lynchburg, also served as Worshipful Master of the lodge from 13 September 1828 until
14 March 1829. He died 15 September 1840 in Lynchburg.

SAMUEL GARLAND, JR. (1830-1862)
Samuel GARLAND, Jr., son of Maurice Hamner GARLAND and Caroline Matilda
GARLAND, was born 16 December 1830 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was educated at
Randolph-Macon College and at the Virginia Military Institute, graduating in 1849.
While at the Virginia Military Institute, he was acting assistant professor of languages.
He entered the law school of the University of Virginia in 1849 and was graduated in
1851. He returned to Lynchburg to practice law with his uncle, Samuel GARLAND, Sr.,
and with his cousins, John F. SLAUGHTER and Charles R. SLAUGHTER. When
Lynchburg College ("Old Lynchburg College") was opened, Samuel GARLAND, Jr.,
was professor of constitutional law.
Samuel GARLAND, Jr., married 15 May 1856 Eliza Campbell R. MEEM, daughter of
John Gaw MEEM and Eliza Campbell RUSSELL of Lynchburg.
In 1859, Samuel GARLAND, Jr., organized the Lynchburg Home Guard and became

its Captain. The unit was mustered into Confederate service as Company G of the
Eleventh Virginia Infantry. During the Civil War, GARLAND was promoted to Colonel
of the Third Virginia Regiment. He was later promoted to Brigadier General and was
given command of four North Carolina regiments. On 14 September 1862, he was killed
in action near Boonsboro, Maryland. He was buried in Lynchburg.

GEORGE T. WILLIAMS (ca.1794-1852)
George T. WILLIAMS was born ca. 1794 in Virginia. He married 28 May 1834
Elvira TOMPKINS, daughter of John TOMPKINS and Elvira POE of Lynchburg,
Virginia.
George T. WILLIAMS, tobacconist, entered into partnership with Samuel
GARLAND and his brother, Maurice H. GARLAND. The GARLAND brothers each put
up $5,000 as capital and WILLIAMS provided his services as manager for his portion of
the capital. The profits of the concern were to be divided with WILLIAMS receiving one
half. Following the death of Maurice H. GARLAND in 1840, WILLIAMS continued as
manager from 1 January 1841 until 31 December 1846.
George T. WILLIAMS was buried 8 July 1852 in the Presbyterian Cemetery,
Lynchburg, Virginia. Nothing further is known at present.

MARY LIGHTFOOT GARLAND (1871-1972)
Mary Lightfoot GARLAND, also known as "Mamie," daughter of Maurice Hamner
GARLAND and Lucy Bertrand GALT, was born 17 April 1871 at Montrose, in Amherst
County, Virginia. In 1888, the family moved to Lynchburg, where Maurice H.
GARLAND was elected city surveyor. A librarian in Richmond, Virginia, for forty
years, Miss GARLAND died 29 May 1972 at the Protestant Episcopal Home in
Richmond. She was buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Lynchburg.

LANDON CABELL GARLAND (1876-1902)
Landon Cabell GARLAND, son of Maurice Hamner GARLAND, and Lucy Bertrand
GALT, was born 2 August 1876 at Montrose, in Amherst County, Virginia. He was
educated at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and worked in Lynchburg as a stenographer
and bookkeeper. He was also a member of the Home Guard and served during the
Spanish-American War. He was accidentally drowned in a boating accident on 23 March
1902 and was buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery.
