METALLIC COTTON BALING COMPANY PAPERS
The papers include correspondence between Thomas T. MUNFORD and George
R. HARVEY concerning the formation of the Metallic Cotton Baling Company,
correspondence regarding a lawsuit involving contracts, and minutes of the meetings of
the board of directors of the company.
METALLIC COTTON BALING COMPANY
The Metallic Cotton Baling Company was chartered in the City of Lynchburg,
Virginia, on 13 January 1900. John HARVEY and his son, George R. HARVEY, of John
HARVEY and Company, commission merchants and wool brokers, Hamilton, Canada,
had proposed, on 26 December 1899, that a company be chartered to develop the DEAN
Compress and Metallic Bale, invented by Francis B. DEANE of Lynchburg, Virginia.
General Thomas T. MUNFORD and DEANE agreed to the proposal as presented.
George R. HARVEY was to assist Frank B. DEANE in the building of the
"experimental" machine. They were to go to Birmingham, Alabama, to build the
machine. A disagreement between HARVEY and DEANE arose over changes in the
design of the machine, resulting in a lawsuit. The last recorded minutes of the
corporation were dated 14 June 1900. Nothing further is known at present. [Metallic Cotton
