LAND GRANT TO DANIEL O'NEAL
The grant is on a printed form with information filled in by hand, granting land to
Daniel O'NEAL. The form is signed by Gov. Patrick HENRY. The top part and one side
of the form have been broken off, thus the description and location of the land is limited.
The grant is dated 2 December 1785.
DANIEL O'NEAL
The 1782 tax list for Bedford County, Virginia, includes a Daniel O'NEAL. Some
Land Grants in Virginia lists a grant of 300 acres to a Daniel O'NEAL, 2 December
1785, in Bedford County.
The land tax records beginning with 1787 list a Daniel NEIL, rather than
O'NEAL. The alterations list for 1785 shows a 300–acre grant to Daniel NEIL. The
earlier spelling continues until the listing of the estate of Daniel NEIL in 1799. The
index to Bedford County wills records the inventory and appraisement of the estate of a
Daniel NEAL in 1800. His heirs were his widow, Mary, along with Zephaniah and
Zachariah NEAL. In 1807, there is the inventory and appraisement for the estate of Mary
NEAL.
The Bedford County marriage bonds register lists Daniel NEAL to Polly
BOOTHE, 17 August 1790.

Publishing Co., 1976); Augusta B. Fothergill & John Mark Naugle, Virginia Taxpayers, 1782–1787

JOHN LYNCH (1740–1820) COLLECTION
JOHN LYNCH (c.1740-1820)
John Lynch was born circa 1740, the son of Irish immigrant Charles Lynch and his
wife, Sarah Clark. He was one of six children, including Colonel Charles Lynch and Sara
Lynch (Terrell). John was described by a neighbor, Louisa Davis, as being very tall and
erect in his adult years. She further notes that he was of fair complexion, clean shaven,
and that his hair was gray.
John was the founder of the town of Lynchburg, which grew up along the James River
at Lynch's Ferry.
Like his mother, John Lynch was an active member of the Society of Friends' South
River Meeting. His marriage to Mary Bowles is recorded in their records, along with
mention of his having served as both clerk and overseer of the meeting. He was the donor
of the land for the meetinghouse and cemetery.
John Lynch died on 31 October 1820, and is buried in the cemetery beside the South
River Meeting House.
