QUILL AND SCROLL SOCIETY
The Quill and Scroll Society, a national honor society for high school journalists, was
organized in Iowa 10 April 1926 by high school supervisors for the purpose of "encouraging and rewarding individual achievement in journalism" and allied fields. The E. C.
Glass High School Chapter was organized in 1928, under the leadership of Evelyn L.
MOORE, a teacher of English at the school.
The E. C. Glass High School Chapter was established "to instill in students the ideal
of scholarship, to advance the standard of journalism, and to promote exact thinking and
clear forceful writing." Membership requirements were to be in the upper third of the
junior class, to have done outstanding work in journalism, to have the recommendation of
the supervisor, and to be approved by the national secretary.
In 1951, the Glass High School Chapter of the Quill and Scroll Society was known as
the Carter GLASS Chapter.
