RUCKER-JENNINGS, INC. (1931-1996)
The Mutual Insurance Service of Lynchburg, Va., was incorporated June 10, 1931, with
capital stock of $15,000. Officers for the incorporation included T. A. Jennings, president and
treasurer, O.C. Rucker, Jr., vice-president and manager, and J. D. Jennings, secretary. In July
1931, the officers proposed changing the name of the company since there were “several Mutual
Insurance Agencies located within the City of Lynchburg.” In August, 1931, the Corporation
petitioned the State Corporation Commission to amend the charter so as to change the name from
Mutual Insurance Service, Incorporated, to Rucker-Jennings, incorporated. The company
continued until around 1996, when it was dissolved.
THEODORE A. JENNINGS (1859-1947)
Theodore A. Jennings was born 8 December 1859 at White Sulphur Springs in
Montgomery County, Virginia, the son of Thomas Allen Jennings and Elizabeth Bailey. He
came to Lynchburg in 1880 and was associated with the N.R. Bowman Tobacco Company until
1895. He went into the grain business with Carrington Mosby under the firm name of Mosby
and Jennings, later operating as T.A. Jennings and sons. The firm was discontinued in 1927 and
Mr. Jennings was quite active in Lynchburg business life, including Rucker-Jennings, Inc. He
resigned as president of Rucker-Jennings, Inc., on 12 October 1942. At the time of his death he
was president of Hill City Realty Company.
Mr. Jennings married Lena Price of Lynchburg in 1886 and they were leading members
of Court Street Methodist Church. He was a member of the Travelers Protective Association, the
Masons, and the Order of the Shrine. He also served as a member of the Lynchburg City

�Council for a number of years. He died on 29 September 1947 and was buried in Spring Hill
Cemetery.
ORLANDO CHILDS RUCKER, JR. (1894-1979)
Orlando Childs Rucker, Jr., was born in Bedford County, Virginia, 19 December 1894,
the son of Orlando Childs Rucker, Sr. and Juanita Miller. He attended Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and Washington and Lee University. He graduated from Cumberland University and
served in World War I. He practiced law in Bedford and was a founding member of the RuckerJennings Insurance Company of Lynchburg, which he served until his retirement.
Rucker married Grace Bargamin, the daughter of Paul Bargamin and Lettie Kasey, of
Bedford County. In his later life, he lived at the Roanoke Methodist Home. He died on 30
August 1979 in a Roanoke hospital and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Bedford, Virginia.
