JOHN FLAVEL SLAUGHTER (1828-1893)
John Flavel SLAUGHTER, son of Robert Harrison SLAUGHTER and Mary Rice
GARLAND, was born 23 February 1828 in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was educated at
the University of Virginia, graduating in 1846. A lawyer, John F. SLAUGHTER was a
member of the law firm of GARLAND and SLAUGHTER of Lynchburg, Virginia. He
married ca. 1854 Mary HARKER of New Jersey.
In 1867, John F. SLAUGHTER and Charles W. STATHAM fought for the
consolidation of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad and the Southside Railroad. The
consolidation had been proposed in 1866, but Lynchburg opposed the plan and the
stockholders of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad defeated the proposition. Later,
when General William MAHONE succeeded to the presidency of the Virginia and
Tennessee, the proposed consolidation became a reality.
In 1868, SLAUGHTER was appointed by Samuel MILLER to serve on the board of
the Lynchburg Orphan Asylum, later the MILLER Orphan Asylum, and was a member of
the board of directors when the orphanage opened in 1875.
In 1869, John F. SLAUGHTER was a member of a committee of nine, headed by
Alexander H. H. STUART, to negotiate "a compromise with the state's Conservative
leaders, key members of Congress, and President [Ulysses S.] GRANT" in the passage of
the state constitution written by the Convention of 1867-1868, "known as the Underwood
Constitution."
John F. SLAUGHTER became president of the First National Bank in Lynchburg in
1876 and remained its president until 1891. He died 22 January 1893 in Lynchburg.

Virginia Secession Convention, held in February 1861. Although SLAUGHTER sought
