THE VANISHING VIRGINIAN COLLECTION
The Vanishing Virginian is a movie based on a book of the same title by Rebecca
Yancey WILLIAMS. The story of Captain Robert Davis YANCEY and his family, the
book and movie give a picture of family life in and around Lynchburg, Virginia, 1913–
1929. Portions of the movie were filmed in the Lynchburg area. The MGM movie made
its world premier in Lynchburg at the Paramount Theatre on 23 January 1942. The
collection contains newspaper clippings about the filming of the movie and the world
premier, souvenir programs, photos from the premier, and special newspaper sections
about the premiere.

ROBERT DAVIS YANCEY (1855–1931)
Robert Davis YANCEY, son of William Tudor YANCEY and Lucy Elizabeth
DAVIS, was born 15 September 1855, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was a graduate of
Virginia Military Institute in 1875, and a graduate of the law school of the University of
Virginia in 1877. He practiced law in Lynchburg and served two terms as mayor of the
city. He was later elected as commonwealth attorney and served in that capacity for a
number of years. He married Rosa FAULKNER on 17 November 1892 in Lynchburg.
He died 3 January 1931, "in the same house and room in which he was born."
