JAMES ADDISON MERIWETHER (1855-aft.1931) FARM ACCOUNT BOOK
The farm account book includes a record of expenses of James A. MERIWETHER's
farm near Lynchburg, Virginia. In addition to individual accounts, there are also
accounts for a plaster mill, a bone mill, and a corn mill, operated by MERIWETHER.
The account book appears to be that of Dr. James Addison MERIWETHER, a physician
who also operated a farm at Holcomb Rock in Bedford County, Virginia.
JAMES ADDISON MERIWETHER (1855-aft.1931)
James Addison MERIWETHER, the son of Charles J. MERIWETHER and Ellen D.
MERIWETHER, was born August 1855, in Bedford County, Virginia. He attended the
University of Virginia Medical Department during 1880-1881. He received his medical
degree from New York College in 1882. He was elected a Fellow of the Medical Society
of Virginia in 1888.
James A. MERIWETHER married 27 April 1882 Emily S. HARRIS, daughter of
James M. HARRIS and Louisa M. TINSLEY, of Bedford County, Virginia.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. MERIWETHER also operated a farm at
Holcomb Rock, in Bedford County, near Lynchburg. He died after 1931.

WAUGH'S FERRY ACCOUNT BOOKS
The collection includes two account books (1848-1849) listing items purchased,
probably from a store at WAUGH's Ferry, rather than accounts of the ferry itself, which
operated on the James River. The ferry operated between Amherst County and Bedford
County, Virginia.

[BOX 2] Account Book (1848-1849) - II
WAUGH'S FERRY
WAUGH's Ferry was established by an Act of the General Assembly of Virginia,
passed on 6 January 1807. The act stated "that [a] public [ferry] shall be constantly kept
at the following [place], and the rates of passing the same as followeth...from the land of
James WAUGH, in the county of Amherst, across Fluvanna [James] River, to the land of
Tamerlane William Whiting DAVIES on the opposite shore in the county of Bedford, the
price for a man six and one quarter cents, and for an horse the same..." According to one
local historian, the "WAUGH's Ferry, east of Snowden, was the most generally used
crossing of the James in the southwestern migrations." There is record of a post office at
WAUGH's Ferry, Bedford County, from 1829 until 1845.

ISAAC ADAMS (ca.1803/1806-1857)
Isaac ADAMS, son of Samuel ADAMS and Martha WADE, was born ca. 1803/1806
in Bedford County, Virginia. At an early age, he moved to Lynchburg, where he became
a merchant in partnership with Ammon HANCOCK in the firm of HANCOCK and
ADAMS. He married 12 June 1832 Sarah Elizabeth DuVAL, daughter of William
DuVAL and Susan Brown CHRISTIAN.
At the death of Ammon HANCOCK in 1847, his heirs brought suit against Isaac
ADAMS for a share of the business partnership. The settlement required that ADAMS
pay the heirs $23,000.
Sometime before April 1844, Isaac ADAMS and his family moved to Buckingham
County and settled on his tract, known as Poplar Spring. The tract was located near the
DuVAL home known as Mt. Comfort. On 25 April 1844, ADAMS cast his vote for the
creation of the new county [Appomattox] at a poll taken at New Store, Buckingham
County. When Appomattox County was formed in 1845, he was appointed Assistant
Marshall.
Isaac ADAMS was elected a delegate to the Whig Convention, held 19 January 1847,
in Farmville, Virginia. He was again elected a delegate to the Whig Convention, held 27
September 1848, in Lexington, Virginia.
In 1850, Isaac ADAMS was appointed census enumerator for his district. In 1851, he
became Commissioner of the Revenue for Appomattox County. He died 10 November
1857 and was buried at Mt. Comfort plantation.

PATRICK GREGORY (1832-aft.1900)
Patrick GREGORY was born August 1832, presumably in Virginia. He married 19
December 1851 Harriett D. HARRISON, daughter of William HARRISON, of
Rockbridge County. By 1881, GREGORY was located in Campbell County, in a section
near Lynchburg known as Clover Valley. He operated a dairy, known as GREGORY and
Company, with his sons, James and William S. GREGORY. Nothing further is known at
present.

Chancery and Law Order Book, Aldermen, January 1858-September 1860. In 1879 Frederick GREGORY
and John A. GREGORY are listed as dairymen residing in the county (Campbell) near the city limits.
There is no mention of Patrick GREGORY. In the directory of 1881-1882, James, Patrick, and William S.
GREGORY are listed as dairymen with GREGORY and Company, at Clover Valley. In 1885, James and
P. GREGORY are listed with GREGORY and Company, with dairy located at Clover Valley. There is no
further mention of GREGORY or the company in the city directories. An examination of local maps
(1891, 1922) reveals the location of Clover Valley as adjoining Orchard Street and extending behind the
Craddock-Terry Shoe Company plant off Craddock Street and Park Avenue. The area was annexed to the
City of Lynchburg in 1908. On 3 May 1859, one Patrick GREGORY presented a certificate in the
Lynchburg Hustings Court, from the County Court, Rockbridge County, dated 31 March 1856. In the
certificate, he stated that he was born in County Kerry, Ireland, ca. 1832, and migrated to the United
States, landing at New York, in November 1848. He was admitted as a citizen of the United States. It is
not known if this is the Patrick GREGORY of Clover Valley.]

BEDFORD ALUM AND IRON SPRINGS COMPANY
Bedford Alum and Iodine Springs Company was chartered
by the General Assembly of Virginia in an act passed 20
March 1877. The purpose of the company was "to purchase
and operate the Bedford Alum and Iodine Springs estate in
Campbell County, Virginia." With a capital stock of
$100,000, the company planned to acquire lands in Campbell
and Bedford counties, not to exceed 500 acres. Plans were
also made to "erect buildings for the accommodation and
entertainment of visitors." In 1878, the name was changed
to the Bedford Alum and Iron Springs Company.
Bedford Alum and Iron Springs operated as a summer
resort and was located at New London, on the border between
Campbell and Bedford counties, "twelve miles from...Lynchburg...four miles from Forest Depot [Bedford County]...and
four miles from Lawyer's Station [Campbell County]."
The waters of the Springs, "known as Aluminous
Sulphated Chalybeate," were advertised as having "tonic,
alterative, diuretic, astringent, aperient, solvent and
anti-periodic properties," and were used in the treatment
of "dyspepsia, debility, nervousness, headache, bronchial
and cutaneous affections, scrofula, diseases peculiar to
women, chronic diarrhea, chills and malaria." "These
springs also put up the water in the shape of salts, which
[was] sent by mail anywhere."
The property, including hotel buildings, dormitory,
billiard hall, ten-pin alley, electric light plant, and a
farm of 165.10 acres, with orchards and farm buildings, was
auctioned 24 July 1924.

LYNCHBURG FEMALE ORPHAN ASYLUM
The Lynchburg Female Orphan Asylum (later the Miller Home), Lynchburg, Virginia,
was established as a corporation by an act of the General Assembly of Virginia in 1849.
Samuel MILLER conveyed to the Orphan Asylum a tract of 11 acres in 1854 and a larger
tract of 46 acres in 1868. The Lynchburg Female Orphan Asylum was chartered 11 June
1868 by the Circuit Court of Lynchburg "for education and support of destitute white
female orphans."
In his will, Samuel MILLER endowed the Lynchburg Female Orphan Asylum and the
corporation continued to operate for a number of years from the proceeds of that
endowment. The main building of the Asylum, designed by Gen. John ELLICOTT of
Baltimore and constructed by Robert C. BURKHOLDER of Lynchburg, was completed
in 1872, with other outbuildings erected for the operation of the home.
In 1959, the Miller Home was moved to its current location on Westerley Drive, with
the properties on Memorial Avenue being developed for commercial use. The corporate
name was changed from Lynchburg Female Orphan Asylum to Miller Home of
Lynchburg, Virginia, Incorporated, on 13 March 1975, although the name, "Miller
Home," had been used before that date.
In ca. 1948, a brochure for the orphanage stated, "for almost eighty years the
Lynchburg Female Orphan Asylum, better known as the Miller Home, has provided
refuge for hundreds of dependent and destitute girls from Lynchburg and vicinity."

Virginia (Lynchburg: J.P. Bell, 1964); Lynchburg Daily Virginian, 12 September 1872, p. 3 col. 1;

JOHN HENSON FLOOD (1830-1899)
John Henson FLOOD, son of Thomas H. and Dorothy FLOOD, was born 15 May
1830 in that section of Buckingham County that became a part of Appomattox County,
Virginia. As a young man, he came to Lynchburg, studied law and was admitted to the
bar. He gave up his law practice due to his failing eyesight and entered into the tobacco
business. He also served as a director of the People's National Bank and as a member of
the City Council.
John H. FLOOD married (1) Mary Nellie CAFFEE of Gloucester County, Virginia.
After the death of his first wife on 1875, he married (2) Margaret (KIRKPATRICK)
HOBSON, widow of George HOBSON, on 15 June 1876 in Lynchburg.
President and member of the board of directors for the Lynchburg Female Orphan
Asylum from 1872 until 1898, John Henson FLOOD died 13 June 1899 at Buffalo Ridge
Springs and was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg.

Note: A transcription is included with each of the images at the bottom of the page; click on an image to read the transcription.
Manuscript 1047 ("Seth Woodroof Account Book") is a handwritten notebook which lists enslaved persons, buyers, and sellers in the slave trade in Lynchburg, Virginia between 1834 and 1840. The book lists individuals by name and is believed to have belonged to Seth Woodroof.
Seth Woodroof was an enslaver and slave trader operating in Lynchburg in the 1800s. He is known to have had business dealings with other slave traders in the city, including John Harris and Rowan Harris.
Manuscript 1047 is a tan colored, leather notebook. Imprinted on the cover in cursive writing is "Seth Woodroof Lynchburg March 1st 1834" and in print "S.W. No. 2". In white lettering at the bottom left are call (classification) numbers "658 W".
The book contains 74 unnumbered interior pages. Page numbering has been assigned to the digitized images by the library. Pages 16 to 61 and page 74 are blank with no linguistic content attributable to Seth Woodroof. Pages 1-16 and 62-73 contain handwritten entries believed to have been made by Seth Woodroof. In the original item, there appear to be missing pages between 10 and 11. Entries on pages 8 and 9 are labeled as "October 16, 1835. " Entries on pages 10 and 11 are labeled as "July 1840."
Woodroof's entries are in black ink and list the names of enslaved persons being sold along with the names of buyers and sellers. Most persons in the book, including enslaved persons, are listed with first and last names. The activity documented in the book is for the period 1834 to 1840.
Most of the entries that document the sales of enslaved persons is entered across the width of adjacent pages in the book. For this reason, the book has been scanned so that images include both the left and right hand pages. Most interior pages in the book are empty with handwritten entries only appearing at the front and back of the book; images of blank pages have been included to provide a complete digital record of the physical manuscript.
It appears that Woodroof recorded the date, place of sales, and seller(s) name across the top of the pages. Woodroof then recorded the first name, last name, age, and original purchase price of each enslaved person on the left hand side of the ledger. In cases where a sale was made on a date differing from that at the top of the page, Woodroof noted the date on the left hand side above or next to the enslaved person's name. On the right hand page, he repeated the first and last names of the enslaved individual, followed by the sales price and buyer's name.
Woodroof appears to have used the notation "do" as shorthand for "ditto", indicating that information on the line above is repeated (i.e., multiple transactions by one buyer). At the bottom or side of each page, Woodroof frequently entered a total numerical amount which represented the dollar sum of purchases and sales.
Pages 02-15 contain handwritten data on sales of enslaved persons, including names and amounts for dates between 01 March 1834 to 08 August 1840. Data entered on page 4 appears to have been continued on pages 72-73.
Pages 16 through 61 are blank with no data.
Pages 62-71 contain information for years 1834-1835. The ten pages at the back of the book include handwritten entries that were entered inverted (upside down and back- to-front). Inverted images have been saved as right-side up images for the digital copy.
An oval stamp marked "Jones Memorial Library" appears on the inside front cover, pages 3, 63, 72, 73, and the inside back cover. The binding string is found between pages 32 and 33.
Additional images of the front and back cover were taken with a ruler to illustrate dimensions of the original item.
A transcription of each image is included and can be accessed by clicking on the image.
To aid the reader, extra markings (such as periods, dashes, and hyphens) that do not significantly add to interpretation of the data have not been included in the transcription. In instances when data is not complete, or there is clarifying data that can assist with interpretation, entries are [bracketed]. In some instances, the order in which words appear has been altered slightly in the transcription so as to enable better interpretation for the reader (i.e., when parts of a date were entered on two lines, they are entered as if on one line, to avoid confusion with the names of persons that follow).
An article and dataset which record the names of individuals in this manuscript has been submitted to Enslaved.org
Researchers and readers who would like to submit a correction or transcription enhancement are invited to contact Jones Memorial Library via the online collection form, with an email to director@jmlibrary.org, or by telephone at 1-434-846-0501.

Manuscript 1047: the Seth Woodroof Account Book is held at Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg, Virginia. The book is among the library’s original local history holdings. The front cover includes the notation “658 W” in white lettering on the bottom right, suggesting that the book was cataloged using the Dewey Decimal system prior to 1993, when the library switched to Library of Congress classification. A sticker on the inside back cover includes this directive: “For Reference/Virginia Collection/Not to be taken from this room.” During the period when the Jones operated as a public library, the Virginia Collection was held in a local history room located in the library’s original building at 434 Rivermont Avenue in Lynchburg. The library moved from the Rivermont Avenue building to its current location in 1987. The Dewey Decimal classification number on the front cover in combination with the Virginia Room stamp on the inside back cover together suggest that the account book came into the library’s collection prior to 1987.

An account of the resource
Scanned images of a list of expenses by T.F. Potter with James Potter for the Colerain Plantation in 1836, This document is part of Jones Memorial Library Manuscript 1141, the Potter Estate Papers, Box 1-2.
The Potter estate included the Colerain and Tweedside Plantations near Savannah, Georgia. Thomas F. Potter and James Potter were brothers who owned and operated the plantations.
In this document, an entry on 20 July 1837 notes "Jail Fees Abraham 3.27" . Other materials in the Potter collection indicate that Abraham was the name of a person enslaved by James Potter on the estate. This entry may relate to this enslaved person and suggests that Abraham was enslaved on the Colerain plantation in 1837.

JONES MEMORIAL LIBRARY
2311 MEMORIAL AVENUE
LYNCHBURG, VA 24501
(434) 846-0501
THE HISTORY OF A CAMPAIGN
by Peter B. Akers & John L. Henry
Enclosed is a diary account "compiled from copious notes taken on the field as the
incidents occurred." Both compilers were members of the Lynchburg Rifle Greys, which
was commanded by Capt. Langhorne. The account covers part of 1861 only.
PETER B. AKERS (c.1841-aft.1898)
Peter B. Akers was born in Virginia about 1841, the son of Bryan Akers and Martha
Morton Moon. He enlisted as a sergeant in Co. A of the 11th Virginia Infantry on 22
April 1861 and was elected 2nd lieutenant one year later. At Milford Station he was
captured and held in several prison camps; he was among the "immortal 600." His
release came on 14 June 1865, from Fort Delaware, where he had been held along with
his brother, Maj. Albert Akers. In later years, he moved to Hamblen Co., TN where he
was an auctioneer. He was living in Morristown, TN in 1898.
In a letter of 18 April 1892, A. Fulkerson, of Bristol, VA, wrote concerning life in the
prison camp at Fort Delaware, "Lieutenant Peter Akers, of Lynchburg, VA, was the star
of the company, and his ceaseless flow of spirit, his wit, humor, and inexhaustible fund
of anecdotes added immensely to the character and enjoyment of the exhibitions, and he
did more, probably, to give life, spirit, and success to the laudable enterprise than any
man in the prison, and for his noble efforts in this behalf, Pete has and deserves the
gratitude of his fellow sufferers."
