LYNCHBURG BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S CLUB
While mobilizing for World War I, the U.S. Government recognized the need for
a cohesive group to coordinate identification of women's available skills and experience.
A Women's War Council, financed through a federal grant, was established by the War
Department to organize the resources of professional women. The National Federation of
Business and Professional Women's Clubs (BPW) was founded on July 15, 1919.
An organizational meeting that led to the formation of the Virginia Federation of
Business and Professional Women’s Clubs was held in Richmond, Virginia, in June
1919, from which four charter clubs – Danville, Lynchburg, Richmond, and Roanoke –
were formed.
“Each club affiliated with the Virginia Federation is a self-governing, nonpartisan, non-sectarian group of business and professional women banded together to set
and maintain a higher standard for women in the business and professional world.
“Through the Education Committee the Club endeavors to impress upon the
school girl the necessity for, at least, a High School Education before entering a business
school.
“The Scholarship and Loan fund of the Club provides the means for ambitious
girls to secure the necessary preparation for a successful business or professional career.”
Throughout the years, three major issues shaped BPW's legislative agenda:
elimination of sex discrimination in employment, the principle of equal pay, and the need
for a comprehensive equal rights amendment.

1863, but apparently returned to teaching after the unit was disbanded. He taught school
in Berks County, Pennsylvania, and Montgomery County in 1864 and returned to
Millersville Normal School in 1865.
In 1866, Jacob Yoder became a teacher for the Freedmen's Bureau and traveled to
Lynchburg, Virginia to teach the newly freed African Americans. He went to
Pennsylvania in 1867 to continue his own education, but returned to Lynchburg to
continue teaching in 1869. Yoder became superintendent of schools for the Freedmen's
Bureau. By the end of the 1870s, Yoder had become an administrator for Lynchburg's
African American schools. In 1881, he was appointed supervisor of Lynchburg's African
American schools.
Jacob Eschbach Yoder married Anna Whitaker 28 June 1871 and they had 7
children. He died in Lynchburg 15 April 1905.

THE DIARIES OF JACOB E. YODER
The diaries, 1861-1870, of Jacob E. Yoder (1838-1905) of Pottstown,
Pennsylvania, and Lynchburg, Virginia, include a diary, 25 January-25 February 1864,
detailing Yoder's teaching in a school in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, describing
the performance of his students. In this diary he also records the weather and comments
on his personal and religious life. It also contains notes on lectures on teaching taken in
1861, accounts, 1862-1864, class lists and grades of students, and miscellaneous notes.
In the second diary, 1866-1867, Yoder records his experiences teaching in a
Freedmen's Bureau School for African Americans in Lynchburg, Virginia, comments on
the sentiments of the local white population on the end of the Civil War and Union
occupation, and relates his personal experiences while teaching.
In the third diary, 1869-1870, Yoder continues commenting on his experiences as
a teacher for the Freedmen's Bureau, recounts trips he made as school superintendent to

various African American schools in central Virginia, and comments on his personal
experiences in Lynchburg. This volume also contains a list of names and copies of
receipts for money given to Alex Wharton of Lynchburg.
The diaries for 1866-1870 were published as The Fire of Liberty in Their Hearts:

Description
An account of the resource
Manuscript Collection 1396 is the Dunbar High School Library Papers. Four folders are included in this collection.
The papers are from the Dunbar Branch of the Jones Memorial Library. The Dunbar Branch was opened in 1924 at the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, a segregated school serving African American students in Lynchburg during the Jim Crow era.
The Dunbar Branch was established by Jane Maud Campbell, director of the Jones Memorial Library. Campbell requested assistance from the Louisville Free Public Library, which was a leader in training African American librarians, to get the branch established. Librarian Rachel Davis Harris traveled from Louisville to Lynchburg to establish the branch and help train Anne Spencer, the Dunbar Branch's first permanent librarian. Spencer served as librarian at the branch from 1924 until 1945.
Included in Folder 1 are a variety of lists published by the Louisville Free Public Library to aid librarians in purchasing books for collections serving African Americans. Also included in the folder are two handwritten lists with additional titles; these lists may have been compiled by Jones Memorial Library staff.
Of note is a 24 page typewritten list compiled by Reverend Thomas Blue and Rachel Harris of the Louisville Free Public Library titled "A List of Books Selected From Titles in the Western Colored Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library Recommended for First Purchase." This list includes marks suggesting that staff from Jones Memorial Library intended to purchase particular titles, with handwritten numbers suggesting the quantity of each title ordered. It is possible that these titles were ordered for use at the Dunbar Branch in Lynchburg.

QUAKER FAMILY RECORDS
by Alexander Brown
The book contains manuscript notes and maps on the genealogy of the following
Lynchburg families: Anthony, Clark, Lynch, Moorman, and Terrell.
ALEXANDER BROWN (1843-1906)
Alexander Brown was born at "Glenmore" in Nelson County, VA, on 5 September
1843. He was the son of Robert Lawrence & Sarah Cabell Callaway. His mother died on
25 July 1849, leaving three children. Robert Brown remarried in 1853, to Margaret
Baldwin Cabell. Their union produced eight more children. The Browns moved to
Lynchburg in 1860, where they ran "The Lynchburg Female Seminary" for some years.
During that year, Alexander attended "Old" Lynchburg College.
Alexander was reared by his grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Cabell Callaway. He was
educated by private tutors, as a youngster, but attended the school of Horace W. Jones
from 1856-1860, at which time he entered "Old" Lynchburg College. He enlisted in the
army of the CSA; he was wounded in a powder-boat explosion at Fort Fisher, NC, in
1864 which rendered him nearly deaf.
After the war, he was a salesman in Washington, DC, but due to his deafness he
returned to Nelson County and took up farming. During these years he devoted most of
his time to historical research and writing about Virginia's early period. Among his
writings were New Views of Early Virginia History (1886) and The Genesis of the
United States (1890). He also wrote The Cabells and their Kin (1895).
On 27 December 1873, he married Caroline Augusta Cabell. She died in 1876, and
Brown married Sarah Randolph Cabell. Both were daughters of Mayo and Caroline
Anthony Cabell. His death came on 25 August 1906.

ELEANOR HARRIS MACRAE (1916-2010) GENEALOGICAL PAPERS
The collection contains correspondence to Eleanor Harris MacRae from family
members and friends with information she gleaned in the writing of her books on the
Harris and Diuguid families. She published William Diuguid of Buckingham County,
Virginia (1988), The Harris family of Prince Edward County (1990), and Family Ties
(2000) Also in the collection are Mrs. MacRae’s research notes about her family lines.
ELEANOR HARRIS MACRAE (1916-2010)
Eleanor Harris MacRae was born 12 April 1916 in Prince Edward County, the
daughter of Marshall Diuguid Harris and Mary Elam Harris. She graduated from
Prospect High School and Farmville State Teachers College, now Longwood University.
She was the wife of Neill MacRae, Jr., from Littleton, North Carolina, for 65 years. She
was the proud mother of four sons: Howard I. Smith, of Richmond; Cary Marshall Smith,
of Roanoke; Neill MacRae III, of Roanoke; and Roderick MacRae, of Lynchburg.
Upon her husband’s retirement in 1969, the family moved from Roanoke to
Virginia Beach where they enjoyed their second career in real estate. Mrs. MacRae was a
member of The Huguenot Society, National Society Daughters of the American
Revolution, the United States Daughters of 1812, and the Colonial Dames of the XVII
Century. In her later years, she enjoyed the hobby of genealogy and was the author of
three books on the subject for which she was given national recognition by the families
involved in her research.
Mrs. MacRae was a member of the Bethpeor Baptist Church in Prince Edward
County during her youth. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of
Richmond and Cave Spring United Methodist Church of Roanoke. She had recently
transferred her membership back to Bethpeor Baptist Church.
Eleanor Harris MacRae died 17 March 2010 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and was
buried in the Harris family plot at the Bethpeor Baptist Church in Prince Edward County.

Description
An account of the resource
Scanned image of the Jones Memorial Library's Report of Dunbar Branch for January 1924 submitted by Anne Spencer and R.D. Harris.
The Dunbar Branch was opened in 1924 in the Dunbar High School in Lynchburg and was the first branch of the Jones Memorial Library. The branch provided service to "colored" residents of the city during a time when library services were racially segregated.
This report records the circulation of library books and materials at the branch during its first month of operation. The report was submitted by Anne Spencer, who was appointed as the branch's permanent librarian, and Rachel Davis Harris, who had traveled to Lynchburg from the Louisville Free Public Library's Western Colored Division in 1923-1924 to advise and assist with establishment of the Dunbar Branch. The report appears to have been entered by hand by Anne Spencer.
