JONES MEMORIAL LIBRARY
2311 MEMORIAL AVENUE
LYNCHBURG, VA 24501
(434) 846-0501
THE HISTORY OF A CAMPAIGN
by Peter B. Akers & John L. Henry
Enclosed is a diary account "compiled from copious notes taken on the field as the
incidents occurred." Both compilers were members of the Lynchburg Rifle Greys, which
was commanded by Capt. Langhorne. The account covers part of 1861 only.
PETER B. AKERS (c.1841-aft.1898)
Peter B. Akers was born in Virginia about 1841, the son of Bryan Akers and Martha
Morton Moon. He enlisted as a sergeant in Co. A of the 11th Virginia Infantry on 22
April 1861 and was elected 2nd lieutenant one year later. At Milford Station he was
captured and held in several prison camps; he was among the "immortal 600." His
release came on 14 June 1865, from Fort Delaware, where he had been held along with
his brother, Maj. Albert Akers. In later years, he moved to Hamblen Co., TN where he
was an auctioneer. He was living in Morristown, TN in 1898.
In a letter of 18 April 1892, A. Fulkerson, of Bristol, VA, wrote concerning life in the
prison camp at Fort Delaware, "Lieutenant Peter Akers, of Lynchburg, VA, was the star
of the company, and his ceaseless flow of spirit, his wit, humor, and inexhaustible fund
of anecdotes added immensely to the character and enjoyment of the exhibitions, and he
did more, probably, to give life, spirit, and success to the laudable enterprise than any
man in the prison, and for his noble efforts in this behalf, Pete has and deserves the
gratitude of his fellow sufferers."

JOHN L. HENRY (c.1839-1861)
John L. Henry was born the son of William and Leomyra W. Lee Henry about 1840.
The 1860 U.S. Census lists him as a printer and living in Chesterfield County in the
household of the Rev. Mr. Robert M. Lee. He enlisted in the 11th VA Infantry as a
private the same day as Peter B. Akers, on 22 April 1861. Pvt. John Henry was killed in
action at Dranesville, VA, on 20 December 1861.

MOORE-WISE FAMILY PAPERS
These papers are from the family of Israel Snead MOORE, a Lynchburg businessman,
and his wife Emily Cornelia Heywood (Nellie) WISE.
Israel MOORE was born in Lynchburg on April 16, 1847, the son of Maurice and Sara
(SNEAD) MOORE. Nellie WISE was born in Warm Springs, Virginia on May 13, 1845,
the daughter of David G. and Mary Jane (PITZER) WISE. The WISE family later lived
at Bel Pre, near Brandy Station, Culpeper County, Virginia.
Israel and Nellie married on December 29, 1869, in Culpeper County, and lived in
Lynchburg, where Israel died in 1927 and Nellie in 1938. They had eight Children:
Bernard Wise (b. April 12, 1871), Mary Louise (b. August 26, 1872), Maurice (Mot) (b.
September. 30, 1874), Nettie Terrill (born December 3, 1876), Shirley Cornelia (born
July 27, 1878), Israel Sherwood (born October 28, 1880), Donald Graeme (born October
13, 1883), and Evelyn Lee (Eva) (born December 19, 1885).
Bernard was a doctor, practicing in St. Louis, Missouri. He married Edith Wayne
WARFIELD in 1908, and died in January 1911, leaving no children.
Mary married Nathaniel C. MANSON of Lynchburg in 1897. Her only child died
shortly after birth.
Maurice was a Lynchburg businessman. He eloped with Mary deCamp BANKS of
Albany, New York, in 1901. Mary had attended school with Shirley MOORE in New
York City. Maurice's only child Mary deCamp (Polly) MOORE, died at the age of 18, in
1920.
Nettie Terrill taught at several different colleges until the 1920s. She never married
and died in Lynchburg in 1974.
Shirley married Thomas Dickson TORREY. They had a son Thomas Fuller
TORREY, born in 1905. T.D. TORREY died in 1912, and Shirley married Johannes
(Hans) SUHLING in 1913. SUHLING was a Lynchburg businessman who had been
born in Germany. The Suhlings had no children. Shirley died in 1945.

MS1361
MOORE-WISE FAMILY PAPERS
(Continued)
Sherwood was also a doctor, and also practiced in St. Louis, where he had a long,
distinguished career at Washington University. He married Veronica C. (Vera)
MOLLISON in 1917. They had two sons: Andrew Maurice (b.1918) and Peter Campbell
(b. 1924). Sherwood died in 1963.
Donald was a Lynchburg businessman. He married Fannie CASKIE. They had one
daughter, Betsy Kimbrough, born in 1915. Donald died in 1974.
Eva taught English at E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, retiring in 1951. She
never married.
Most of the letters are written to and from various family members. In the late 1880s
and throughout the 1890s, there are many letters from various children away at boarding
schools and colleges. Nettie and Eva spent several summers in Europe and sent back
letters and postcards from their trips. Mrs. Sherwood MOORE was a faithful
correspondent. There is little from Donald. There are also a number of letters about
genealogy, some filed in with the regular correspondence and some filed with the
appropriate families in the boxes of genealogical materials. For the sake of saving room,
most postcards have been put into a separate box.
The oldest letters in the collection are from members of the WISE family. These
include letters written during the Civil War. There are also diaries of Nellie's sister, Ann
Eliza, and her brother Louis, kept in the 1860s.
In addition to letters and postcards, there are also greeting cards, advertising cards
from Lynchburg stores, a small group of Sherwood MOORE's professional papers,
reminiscences by various MOOREs, and papers written by members of the MOORE
family on historical topics. There is a small collection of family photographs and other
assorted family memorabilia. Recipe books, autograph albums, school books, MOORE
family diaries, and other volumes are also part of this collection.
Evelyn MOORE co-authored a paper on Bernhard GUTMANN, an artist who lived in
Lynchburg. She also collected some photos, letters, and newspaper articles about him, all
of which are in the MOORE-WISE Papers.
The MOOREs were interested in genealogy and their notes about many related
families, especially KYLE, PITZER, and WISE, are included in this collection. Along
with the notes is some of their correspondence about their families.

LYNCHBURG, VA 24501

JAMES OVERTON CARR (1793-1863) DIARY
The diary [1851-1852] of a farmer, probably James Overton CARR of Albemarle
County, Virginia. The diary also lists Bible readings [1852-1866] and contains copies of
poems. Later newspaper clippings are pasted on some pages [perhaps by Martha J.
CUNDIFF whose name appears on inside cover].
JAMES OVERTON CARR (1793-1863)
James Overton CARR, son of Garland CARR and Mary WINSTON, was born 6
October 1793 in Albemarle County, Virginia. [John B. Minor, The Minor Family of Virginia
(Lynchburg, VA: J. P. Bell, 1923), p. 36.] He married 22 November 1817 Mary A. ALLEN,
daughter of Richard H. ALLEN. [John Vogt, T. William Kethley, Jr., Albemarle County Marriages,
1780-1853, Vol. 1 (Athens, GA: Iberian Publishing, 1991), p. 59. Bond dated 20 November 1817,
Marriage return dated 22 November 1817.]
James Overton CARR served as an Elder in the South Plains Presbyterian Church,
Albemarle County, Virginia, in 1824. When the Charlottesville First Presbyterian
Church separated from the South Plains united congregation in 1839, he also served as
Elder for the Charlottesville congregation. [Howard McKnight Wilson, The Lexington
Presbyterian Heritage (Verona, VA: McClure Press, 1971), pp. 183, 186.]
A farmer of Albemarle County, James Overton CARR lived at "The Meadows." He
later removed to Amherst County, Virginia, were he died 11 September 1863. [Edgar
Woods, Albemarle County in Virginia (Bridgewater, VA: Green Bookman, 1932), p. 161. Date of death
given as 1864; Census 1850, Albemarle Co., VA, National Archives and Records Service, M-432, Roll
932, p. 210, Household 784, Family 784; Land tax records, Albemarle County, VA, 1850-1851,
Microfilmed records, Jones Memorial Library, Lynchburg, VA. Owned 281 3/4 acres on Meadow Creek,
2 miles west of Courthouse; "A Voice from my Angel Father...," Poem, James Overton Carr Diary,
MS1253, Jones Memorial Library, Lynchburg, VA. Age at death given as 69 years 11 months 5 days,
which corresponds with birth date of 6 October 1793.]
[DOCUMENTATION]
"...June 27th [1851]...went to Bentivar...brought daughter Elizabeth home..." The name,
"Bentivar," is found in several entries. Bentivar was built ca. 1795 by Garland CARR,
father of James Overton CARR. The property passed to Daniel Ferrel CARR ca. 1838 at
the death of Garland CARR. Daniel Ferrel CARR died ca. 1847 and left the estate to his
son Dr. W. G. CARR. [Woods, Albemarle County, loc.cit.; Mary Rawlings, Ante–Bellum Albemarle
(Charlottesville, VA: People's National Bank, 1935), p. 66.]

JAMES OVERTON CARR (1793-1863) DIARY (Continued)
"...[27 June 1851]...brought daughter Elizabeth home..."
"...[16 July 1851]...took Mary and the girls on a visit to Red Hills to spend some days in
my dear old neighborhood..."
"...[24 July 1851]...in the afternoon came as far as Bentivar on our way home, Mary,
Ann, Jane Margaret and myself..."
"...[13 November 1851]...sent hands to help Henry pull off his corn at Pen Park..."
"...[27 November 1851]...killed 28 [hogs] of my own and 5 for wife...mine weighed 3540,
Mary 625 lbs..."
In 1850, the household of James O. CARR, of Albemarle County, Virginia, included:
(Household 784, Family 784)
James O. CARR 56 Farmer Real est. $8000
Mary CARR
50
Virginia CARR 30
Ann CARR 22
Hetty CARR
28
Jane CARR 17
Elizabeth CARR 25 George CARR 2
[1850 Census, Albemarle County, VA, loc.cit.]
G. C. BROADHEAD, in his article on the CARR family, states that the six children of
James O. CARR are: Richard Henry CARR, born ca. 1823; Hetty CARR, born ca. 1825;
Jane Margaret CARR, born ca. 1832; Virginia CARR, born ca. 1819; Elizabeth CARR;
Ann CARR. [Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 3 (1896), p. 212.]
"...[7 September 1851]...heard Mr. WAILES preach..." There are numerous entries
concerning "Mr. WAILES." Benjamin M. WAILES was minister of the Charlottesville
[Va.] First Presbyterian Church 1847-1853. [Wilson, Lexington Presbytery Heritage, p. 186.]
James O. CARR was a trustee of the Charlottesville church when it was constructed in
1827. [Woods, Albemarle County, p. 132.]
On the basis of the evidence presented, it would appear that James Overton CARR
(1793-1863) wrote the diary.

LEONIE DOSS COCKE (1915-2008) FAMILY PAPERS (Cont’d.)
LEONIE DOSS COCKE (1915-2008)
Leonie Doss was born 9 June 1915 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the daughter of
Robert Lester Doss and Maude Leslie Hardy. In 1936, she married Brice Tinsley Cocke, son of
Winbern Cocke and Helen Martha Owen. She was co-author, with Virginia Webb Cocke, of
Cockes and Cousins. Leonie Doss Cocke died 31 August 2008 in Lynchburg, Virginia, and was
buried in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
THOMAS W. COCKE (1819-1888)
Thomas Cocke (no middle name but used initial W with Thomas) was born 10 April
1819 and died 8 February 1888. He was buried in the Wagner Graveyard, Pittsylvania County,
near Gretna, Virginia, known earlier as Whittles Depot. He owned over a thousand acres of land
at the time of his death. He did not believe in slavery and never owned one. When he needed
help on the farm, he would hire from neighbors. During the Civil War he was a prison guard of
Federal prisoners near Danville, Virginia. Thomas W. Cocke was a very progressive farmer and
planter. Among his papers are receipts for improved machinery for both farm and home. He
was a tobacco planter and had an improved orchard. He had accounts with merchants in
Lynchburg and Danville. Hundreds of receipts are marked “paid in full”, this being one of his
strictest policies.
