LILLIE TODD (SHELTON) MASON (ca.1883-aft.1937)
Lillie Todd SHELTON, daughter of E. Archer and Annie M. SHELTON, was born in
Lynchburg, Virginia, ca. 1883. In 1902, she was a teacher in Lynchburg. By 1904, she
had become a cashier for D. MOSES and Company, a dry goods and millinery concern.
After moving up to assistant bookkeeper at D. MOSES, she became a bookkeeper for
CRAIGHILL and JONES, druggists.
Lillie Todd SHELTON married Charles William MASON on 5 June 1912. Born in
Abingdon, Virginia, he was the son of C. W. and H. F. MASON. In Lynchburg, he was a
druggist for CRAIGHILL and JONES. He died ca. 1918, presumably in Lynchburg.
Following the death of her husband, Lillie S. MASON lived in several places,
including Lynchburg (ca.1921, ca.1933, ca.1937), Norfolk (ca.1921), Roanoke (ca.19281933, ca.1936-1937), and Chatham (ca.1937), in Virginia, and in Macon, Georgia
(ca.1923). Nothing further is known at present.

GARLAND-RODES CAMP (LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA)
Work began in June 1887 to establish a Confederate veteran's camp in Lynchburg,
Virginia. On 28 April 1888, the camp was organized as the Samuel GARLAND Camp,
United Confederate Veterans, Camp No. 8, Virginia Division, Camp No. 1521, United
Confederate Veterans. On 7 May 1894, the camp was renamed the GARLAND-RODES
Camp, United Confederate Veterans. The camp remained active for about forty years
and met for a number of years in the Camp Room in the Jones Memorial Library.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans was organized in 1896, under the auspices of the
United Confederate Veterans. The main objectives of the organization were to preserve
Southern history, to provide for the widows and orphans of veterans, to erect monuments
and memorials, and "to instill into our descendants a devotion to and reverence for the
principles represented by the Confederate States of America to the honor, glory and
memory of our fathers who fought in that cause."
The GARLAND-RODES Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans, was inactive for a
period. The charter for Camp No. 409 was reactivated in 1981 and the camp has been
quite active since that time.

BLACK BADGE FRATERNITY, KAPPA CHAPTER
The Kappa Chapter of the Black Badge Fraternity was organized 23 December 1873,
by "resident members" of the fraternity living in Lynchburg, Virginia. Those members
included D. T. WALKER, J. B. BOCOCK, C. W. BOCOCK, J. P. HIX, and B. W.
BOCOCK.
Meetings, held "each alternate Wednesday," included in the program an essay or
original oration and a reading selection. A critic was appointed to "criticise the exercises
and general conduct of the members."
Applicants to this secret fraternity were to be at least 18 years of age, of good
character, "and of such health as not to be burdensome to the Chapter." Should a member
divulge the name of a brother in the fraternity or "make known the business of the
Chapter to any person not connected with the order," that member could be fined,
suspended, or expelled from the Chapter.
Members were subject to fines in varying amounts for offenses against the fraternity.
The more severe fines were for offenses such as "profane or indecent language (mild)
$2.50," "contempt of authority $2.50," "leaving the hall without permission $1.00,"
"absence from the anniversary meeting $2.00," and "absence from funeral of a deceased
brother $2.00."
The Black Badge Society, the "first social fraternity," was organized at Roanoke
College, Salem, Virginia, ca. 1859, and continued in operation until ca. 1882. The
society offered an "annual gold prize medal...for superiority in oratory. The badge of the
fraternity was "of black enamel, engraved with the letter Sigma, skull and bones, and
crossed swords." The motto of the Society was "Be Invisible."
Other chapters were organized both in the State of Virginia and in other states Alpha - Roanoke College, 1859

THE WEDNESDAY BOOK CLUB
The Wednesday Book Club, the "oldest cultural organization" of Lynchburg, Virginia,
began in October, 1895. Membership in the club was limited to twelve and the meetings
were devoted to brief talks and discussions of topics based on the theme for the year.
Meetings were held from September to May. In 1921, the Club, through Mrs. James D.
PAXTON, one of its members, commissioned Timothy COLE, "noted wood engraver,"
to execute a bookplate for the Club. The bookplate was designed with a twelve-branched
candelabrum, representing the twelve members of the Club. "The distinguished artist
accepted the commission but owing to his long friendship with the PAXTON's [Dr. and
Mrs. James D. PAXTON] declined to charge for it." The last meeting of the Club was
held 17 November 1978.
[The Wednesday Book Club Papers, Mss., MS1136, Jones Memorial Library, Lynchburg, VA.]
TIMOTHY COLE (1852-1931)
Timothy COLE, son of Skinner COLE, was born in London, England, in 1852. He
immigrated to the United States in 1857 and was employed by Century Magazine in
1875. He traveled to Europe to engrave the Old Masters in 1883. In 1904, COLE was
awarded the only grand prize given for wood engraving at the St. Louis Exposition. The
author of Notes to Old Italian Masters, Timothy COLE died 17 May 1931.

JAMES RIVER CLUB
The James River Club, a downtown club for Lynchburg men, opened 16 March 1959
in the lower level of the Virginian Hotel. The Club was proposed for "the private use of
those who are most essentially concerned with the ongoing commercial, professional and
civic life of the community." The organizing committee, with Henry E. McWANE as
acting president, secured the charter for the club, and set about to finance the renovation
of the leased property, through the issuance of bonds.
The James River Club included four dining areas, a bar and cocktail lounge, card
rooms, and a television room. Membership was open to men only. Wives of members
had guest privileges and were given the privileges of the "Mixed Dining Room," and
were not permitted in the card rooms. All ladies were to "have male escort after 5:00
p.m., at which time, the Bar will be open to ladies."
The James River Club, "an exclusive downtown businessmen's meeting place for
nearly 13 years," closed on 15 February 1973.
[James River Club Papers, Mss., MS1119, Jones Memorial Library, Lynchburg, VA. Included in the
materials is a bond for the "Lynchburg City Club, Inc." with Henry E. McWane as president. This may
have been the original name of the James River Club.]

HILLSIDE GARDEN CLUB
The Hillside Garden Club, first known as the Junior Garden Club, was organized in
Lynchburg, Virginia, in July 1935. Originally with a membership limited to 20 members,
the Club became a member of the Garden Club of Virginia in 1953 and increased its
membership to fifty members. In 1954, the Club joined with the Lynchburg Garden Club
in the promotion of Historic Garden Week, an annual event in the State of Virginia.
Through the years, the Club has participated in beautification projects in the city, in
operating a nature camp, and in the restoration of the Aviary in Miller Park.
Hillside has embraced various projects, including the grounds at Point of Honor,
the Aviary, the Old City Cemetery and Lynchburg Grows.
A major focus is Harlem Renaissance poet Anne Spencer’s garden, described by
the late poet as “half my world.” The club began restoring the garden in 1983 and now
maintains it. In 2009, the Garden Club of Virginia chose the project for its Common
Wealth Award, Hillside’s second such award.

FORT HILL WOMAN'S CLUB
The Fort Hill Woman's Club, in Lynchburg, Virginia, was organized 21 February
1912 in the home of Mrs. H. T. NICHOLAS, first President of the Club. The original
purpose of the Club was to provide a social organization for the women of the Fort Hill
section of Lynchburg. The members adopted as a motto a quotation from Isaiah 41:6,
"And they helped everyone their neighbor and each one said to his brother, 'Be of good
courage.'" The first philanthropic work undertaken by the Club was to provide aid for the
county demonstration work.
In 1920, the Fort Hill Woman's Club, in cooperation with Old Dominion Chapter,
United Daughters of the Confederacy, set about to build a clubhouse in the Confederate
fort known as Fort Early. The building, designed by architect Stanhope S. Johnson, was
completed in 1923 through the efforts of the membership. Jones Memorial Library
assisted with the financing of the construction of the south wing and established the Fort
Hill branch of the Library. The first meeting of the Fort Hill Woman's Club in its new
clubhouse was held on 10 October 1923.
In 1928, the property of the Fort Hill Club, "consisting of nearly 100 acres of land
and other effects, with the exception of the club building," was deeded to the City of
Lynchburg for a Confederate memorial. Under the terms of the agreement, the building
was to remain the property of the Fort Hill Woman's Club and the Old Dominion
Chapter, U.D.C. Should the two organizations agree to discontinue use of the building, it
would become the property of the City.
The Fort Hill branch of Jones Memorial Library, housed in the clubhouse, was
discontinued in the 1950's. As of this writing, the Club retains ownership of the
clubhouse building.

PIEDMONT CLUB (1890-1928)
The Piedmont Club was incorporated 19 August 1890 as a private gentleman's club in
Lynchburg, Virginia. Organized "for the promotion of social intercourse and for the
purpose of maintaining a library, reading rooms, pleasure rooms, etc", the corporation
could not hold more than five acres of property at any one time and its capital stock was
limited to "five thousand dollars, divided into shares of twenty-five dollars each."
Rules for members included no whistling or singing in the Club House, no loud
conversation, no dogs, no sleeping on any sofas, and no placing of feet on any article of
furniture. Gentlemen members were not to "appear in the parlors or reading-rooms
without a coat on."
The building housing the permanent headquarters of the Club, at 1001 Church Street,
was constructed ca. 1902 by the local architectural firm of FRYE and CHESTERMAN.
In 1928, realizing that declining membership had resulted in the Club being "no longer
self-sustaining," the Board of Governors appointed a committee "to arrange for the sale
of the Club property and the liquidation of its indebtedness." The City of Lynchburg
agreed to purchase the property for $39,000 and to purchase the furniture, fixtures, and
equipment for $1,000. The building was used as an annex to City Hall until it was razed
in 1957.
