SAMUEL DeMORRES SMITH (1889-1963) FAMILY PAPERS
The collection includes a genealogy of the Smith family, descendants of William
Smith, who came to America in the 17th century, with miscellaneous photographs and
miscellaneous clippings of the Smith family. Also included is a copy of Fifty Years of
Rhyming and an Autobiography, by William O. Smith.
SAMUEL DeMORRES SMITH (1889-1963)
Samuel DeMorres Smith, son of Lorenzo Dow Smith and Mary Gorman, was
born 27 June 1889 in Mannahawkin, New Jersey. He worked as a yardmaster for the
Norfolk and Western Railroad in Lynchburg, Va. Smith died 29 April 1963 and is buried

MERIWETHER ANDERSON SALE, SR. (1942- )
Meriwether Anderson (Andy) Sale, the son of William Goodridge Sale and Ann
Meriwether Anderson, was born 3 August 1942 in Charleston, West Virginia. A graduate
of Davidson College in North Carolina and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond,
Virginia. He married Frances Ferguson Wood of Johnson City, Tennessee, in June 1965.
He served in pastorates in Kentucky (1969-1972), Virginia (1972-1983) and Missouri
(1983-1996). He served as General Presbyter for the 141 congregations in the Presbytery
of the Peaks with offices in Lynchburg, Virginia (1996-2004). He retired as interim
pastor for Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg, Va., in September 2006.
With his wife, he moved to Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
