NICHOLAS CABELL HORSLEY (1826-1891)
Nicholas Cabell Horsley, born in 1826, was the son of John & Mary Mildred
Cabell Horsley and the grandson of William Horsley, Jr., of Nelson County, VA. After
returning from a trip to the California gold fields, he married first in 1853, Elizabeth
Wilkes, daughter of Benjamin and Matilda Duffel Wilkes, Sr., of Bedford. Secondly, he
married Nannie Deane, of North Carolina.
He purchased the Peaks of Otter Hotel from his brother-in-law, Leyburn Wilkes,
and ran it until it burned. He then operated a hotel out of his home, known as Horsley
Inn. Between 1888 and 1889, he moved to Lynchburg and ran the Horsley House at 210
Eleventh Street until his death August 1891.

LEYBURN WILKES (1831-1891)
Leyburn Wilkes, the son of Benjamin & Matilda Duffel Wilkes, Sr., was born in
Virginia circa 1830. He married Elizabeth J. Owen, of Botetourt County, Virginia on 17
June 1852. Benjamin Wilkes, Sr. acquired thousands of acres of land in the area of Goode
and the Peaks of Otter during the 1850’s, and with his son, Leyburn, operated the
ordinary at the Peaks of Otter until 1857, after which Leyburn ran it alone and built the
Otter Peaks Hotel. Additions were made to the hotel, and it became known as Peaks of
Otter House and, later, Peaks of Otter Hotel. Nicholas Cabell Horsley, Benjamin’s sonin-law, bought out Leyburn’s interest in the hotel. Leyburn Wilkes was the first
postmaster of the Peaks of Otter Post Office from 25 July 1857, until it was discontinued
17 December 1860.
The 1860 US Census for Campbell County, VA, lists Leyburn as a hotelkeeper in
Lynchburg. Asbury Christian reports in Lynchburg and Its People that Leyburn Wilkes
refitted the Piedmont House in 1860. In 1870, he was a hotelkeeper in the Liberty
District of Bedford Co., and in 1880, the Forest District of Bedford Co., as a farmer.

CHARLES A. COLHOUN (1822-aft.1900)
Charles A. COLHOUN was born in Virginia in October 1822. He married, at New
Market, 12 January 1848 Jane P. WILLS, daughter of Catlett WILLS and Belinda
PETERS, of Nelson County. At the time of his marriage, COLHOUN was said to be "of
Baltimore."
By 1850, Charles A. COLHOUN had established himself as a merchant in Nelson
County. Between 1850 and 1860, he moved with his family to Montgomery County,
where he became proprietor of the hotel at Allegheny Springs. In 1860, he had real estate
valued at $60,000 and a personal estate of $10,000. By 1870, the real estate value had
increased to $100,000 and COLHOUN's personal estate had increased to $15,000.
Charles A. COLHOUN continued as proprietor of the Allegheny Springs Hotel for a
number of years.
Allegheny Springs was a resort located near Shawsville in Montgomery County.
Water from the springs contained "nearly 30 elements" and was "famous for its cure of...
dyspepsia." The resort included a hotel and 150 cottages, and, at one time, could
accommodate 1000 people.

CARROLL HOTEL MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS
The records, dated 1892-1894, include a subscription list for capital stock of a hotel
company and several invoices received by the hotel following its construction and opening.
CARROLL HOTEL, LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA, 1892-1959
The subscription list for capital stock, dated 23 November 1892, indicated that a hotel
was to be built in Lynchburg, Va. on property at the corner of Main and Eighth Streets, occupied
then by the Lynchburg Trust Co. The Hotel Carroll Co. was chartered 4 January1893. The
capital stock of the company was to be not less than $50,000 and no more than $250,000. The
subscribers included John W. Carroll, John Wall, Adams Brothers & Paynes (Co.), George M.
Murrell, Camillus Christian, Thomas D. Christian, Davis Childs & Co., and John P. Pettyjohn.
The hotel was named the Hotel Carroll, perhaps for John W. Carroll who was the primary
subscriber. The hotel opened in 1893, as indicated by the invoices dated January-May 1894, and
was demolished in 1959.
JOHN WESLEY CARROLL (1832-1898)
John Wesley Carroll was born in Staunton, Augusta Co., Va., 3 March 1832, the son of
Jacob Carroll and Isabel Layman. When his parents died, he went to Lynchburg, Virginia, in
1848 to learn the trade of cabinetmaker with the firm of Folkes and Winston. He worked for
them for two years and then formed a partnership with William Crumpton, which continued for
nearly thirteen years. In 1859, he began the manufacture of granulated smoking tobacco and
soon built up a vast business. He continued his business during the Civil War. His profits were
entirely wiped out with the defeat of the Confederacy, but, by 1867, he had increased his sales
and had purchased the Crumpton factory. His tobacco was rated with such a high grade of
excellence that he received numerous premiums at international expositions.
Carroll also served as president of the Lynchburg National Bank, director of the
Lynchburg Loan and Trust Company, a director of the Slate Coal Company, and as president of
the Carroll Hotel Company. He also served as a director of the Female Orphan Asylum of
Lynchburg and a member of the Lynchburg City Council for thirty-two years. He was widely
known as one of the most public-spirited citizens of the city.
John Carroll married Sarah Elizabeth Crumpton, daughter of William Crumpton
in 1850. After her death, he married Sallie F. Adams, daughter of Isaac Adams of Appomattox
County, Virginia, in 1878.
John Wesley Carroll died 9 February 1898 in Lynchburg and is buried in the
Presbyterian Cemetery.

LETTER, R.B. HALL TO J. MAUD CAMPBELL, 16 MARCH 1927
Letter from R.B. Hall to J. Maud Campbell, Vice-President, Altrusa Club, Lynchburg,
Virginia, regarding a proposed apartment hotel building for professional women in Lynchburg.
Hall outlines procedures for obtaining loans, architect’s services, plans and specifications,
construction and equipment necessary from the Central Finance and Development Company.
Included with the letter is a pamphlet of amortization tables from the Shenandoah Valley Joint
Stock Land Bank of Staunton, Virginia.
ALTRUSA CLUB, LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA
In 1917, Altrusa Institute was formed in Nashville, Tennessee, as a place for business and
professional women to meet and exchange ideas. The organization decided to make vocational
education for women a national policy. The Lynchburg Chapter of Altrusa was formed on 24
June 1923, with eight members. The motto of the organization is “Patriotism, Efficiency, and
Service.” The organization invites women in business professions to join “with the idea that
cooperation and mutual endeavor along constructive lines will benefit civic effort, broaden the
purpose of the members and promote good fellowship.” [News, Lynchburg, Va., 1 Jan 1924 p. 8 col. 1]
JANE MAUD CAMPBELL, 1869-1947
Jane Maud Campbell was born on March 13, 1869, in Liverpool, England, the first
daughter and one of seven children of George and Jane (Cameron) Campbell. Following the
death of her mother several years later, Campbell was raised by a nurse and governess. When she
was twelve, the family sailed to the United States, where she attended a private school in
Richmond, Virginia. Returning to Great Britain the following year, Campbell lived with her
grandmother in Edinburgh while attending school; she later graduated from the Ladies' College
of Edinburgh University and from the Edinburgh School of Cookery and Domestic Economy.
Returning to the United States, Campbell worked in Charles Town, West Virginia, as
secretary in a family business, before taking a job as an assistant in the reference room at the
Free Public Library in Newark, New Jersey. In 1902 she accepted the position of head of public
libraries in Passaic, New Jersey, where she became increasingly concerned with the plight of
newly arrived immigrants. In addition to furnishing the libraries with foreign language books
about American life, Campbell was the sole woman on a 1906 commission (and the first woman
on any New Jersey commission) appointed "to inquire into and report upon the general condition
of the immigrants coming into or residents within this State." This panel was instrumental in
persuading the legislature to provide free evening classes for immigrants, among the first such
classes in the country.
MS1395
In 1910, she left New Jersey to join the North American Civic League in New York City,
where she worked with immigrants, teaching them about the naturalization process and about
their prospects for employment as American citizens. In 1913 she was appointed Educational
Director for Work with Aliens of the Massachusetts Library Commission, the first such post in
the United States. In this capacity she traveled throughout the state, selecting and delivering
foreign language books requested by town libraries, and lecturing on the important role libraries
could play in the education and assimilation of immigrants. She was not only an advocate of the
"library as social force," but also spoke on public policies relating to immigrants. During World
War I she worked at Camp Devens, organizing a hospital library for convalescing soldiers.
In 1922, Campbell left Massachusetts to assume the position of head librarian of the
Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg, Virginia. During her tenure at Jones Memorial, several
branch libraries were established. Despite being burdened with operating the library under
segregation, she worked to try to establish equitable service to black citizens, sending trucks of
books to the local public schools including the segregated African American high school. At this
school, she later set up the Dunbar branch and appointed poet Anne Spencer as the librarian. She
set up a second branch library within the Robert E. Lee Junior High School. Both of these
libraries were later taken over by the schools themselves. Other branches were at the Atrium in
Miller Park and the clubhouse at Fort Early.
Under Miss Campbell’s leadership, the collection grew from 6,500 to more than 70,000
volumes. She retired in February 1947. Jane Maud Campbell died 24 April 1947 and is buried in
Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia.

ALTRUSA CLUB, LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA
In 1917, Altrusa Institute was formed in Nashville, Tennessee, as a place for business and professional women to meet and exchange ideas. The organization decided to make vocational education for women a national policy. The Lynchburg Chapter of Altrusa was formed on 24 June 1923, with eight members. The motto of the organization is “Patriotism, Efficiency, and Service.” The organization invites women in business professions to join “with the idea that cooperation and mutual endeavor along constructive lines will benefit civic effort, broaden the purpose of the members and promote good fellowship.” [News, Lynchburg, Va., 1 Jan 1924 p. 8 col. 1]
JANE MAUD CAMPBELL, 1869-1947
Jane Maud Campbell was born on March 13, 1869, in Liverpool, England, the first daughter and one of seven children of George and Jane (Cameron) Campbell. Following the death of her mother several years later, Campbell was raised by a nurse and governess. When she was twelve, the family sailed to the United States, where she attended a private school in Richmond, Virginia. Returning to Great Britain the following year, Campbell lived with her grandmother in Edinburgh while attending school; she later graduated from the Ladies' College of Edinburgh University and from the Edinburgh School of Cookery and Domestic Economy.
Returning to the United States, Campbell worked in Charles Town, West Virginia, as secretary in a family business, before taking a job as an assistant in the reference room at the Free Public Library in Newark, New Jersey. In 1902 she accepted the position of head of public libraries in Passaic, New Jersey, where she became increasingly concerned with the plight of newly arrived immigrants. In addition to furnishing the libraries with foreign language books about American life, Campbell was the sole woman on a 1906 commission (and the first woman on any New Jersey commission) appointed "to inquire into and report upon the general condition of the immigrants coming into or residents within this State." This panel was instrumental in persuading the legislature to provide free evening classes for immigrants, among the first such classes in the country.
In 1910, she left New Jersey to join the North American Civic League in New York City, where she worked with immigrants, teaching them about the naturalization process and about their prospects for employment as American citizens. In 1913 she was appointed Educational Director for Work with Aliens of the Massachusetts Library Commission, the first such post in the United States. In this capacity she traveled throughout the state, selecting and delivering foreign language books requested by town libraries, and lecturing on the important role libraries could play in the education and assimilation of immigrants. She was not only an advocate of the "library as social force," but also spoke on public policies relating to immigrants. During World War I she worked at Camp Devens, organizing a hospital library for convalescing soldiers.
In 1922, Campbell left Massachusetts to assume the position of head librarian of the Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg, Virginia. During her tenure at Jones Memorial, several branch libraries were established. Despite being burdened with operating the library under segregation, she worked to try to establish equitable service to black citizens, sending trucks of books to the local public schools including the segregated African American high school. At this school, she later set up the Dunbar branch and appointed poet Anne Spencer as the librarian. She set up a second branch library within the Robert E. Lee Junior High School. Both of these libraries were later taken over by the schools themselves. Other branches were at the Atrium in Miller Park and the clubhouse at Fort Early.
Under Miss Campbell’s leadership, the collection grew from 6,500 to more than 70,000 volumes. She retired in February 1947. Jane Maud Campbell died 24 April 1947 and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia.
