LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 24501

THOMAS JEFFERSON (1743-1826) NOTE TO DOCTOR STEPTOE
The collection consists of a note from Thomas JEFFERSON, perhaps written at Poplar
Forest, Bedford County, Virginia, to Doctor STEPTOE of Bedford County, 13 September
1815, asking him to come for breakfast to join a Mr. CORREA, a Mr. GILMER, and
JEFFERSON, in a botanical expedition. Also included are a typescript and a photocopy
of the note.
"Mr. CORREA" is most probably the Abbe Joseph CORREA de SERRA (17501823), "Portuguese philosopher, scientist [botanist], and diplomat." "Mr. GILMER" is
most probably Francis Walker GILMER (1790-1826), lawyer, author, and botanist. Both
men were close friends of JEFFERSON.
"In the summer of 1815, [Francis Walker] GILMER actually took up his residence in
Winchester [Virginia], but no sooner had he done so than CORREA [de SERRA]
appeared and induced him to go to Monticello. The two accompanied JEFFERSON to
his Poplar Forest estate in Bedford County, and then the European philosopher and the
American lawyer continued their journey into the deeper South."

WILLIAM STEPTOE (1785-1862)
William STEPTOE, son of James STEPTOE, Clerk of Court for Bedford County,
Virginia, and Frances CALLAWAY, was born 3 August 1785 in Bedford County. He
was a graduate of the Philadelphia Medical School and had a medical practice at New
London, VA. He married (1) Nancy BROWN, daughter of Henry BROWN and Frances
THOMPSON. On 14 October 1822, he married (2) Mary B. DILLON, daughter of
Edward DILLON, of Prince Edward County. Dr. STEPTOE’s home was “Arrington
Place. He also later acquired “Cedar Grove” through his marriage to Nancy BROWN.
The family physician of Thomas JEFFERSON and the Poplar Forest slaves, Dr.
STEPTOE died 3 December 1862 at his home in Bedford County.

BARNUM INVITATION TO THE CIRCUS, 1877
The invitation from Henry Barnum, general manager of Howes’ Great London Circus –
Hippodrome and Sanger’s English Menagerie of Trained Animals, to attend the performance of
the circus on 19 April 1877 is addressed to Rev. John Bayley and is signed by H.C. Hodges,
agent. Also included is a newspaper clipping from The Daily Dispatch, Richmond, Virginia,
announcing a change in the number of performances of the circus in Petersburg and in
Richmond. A portion of a sermon, possibly by Bayley, is written on the reverse of the invitation.
HENRY BARNUM (ABOUT 1826-1902)
Henry Barnum was a showman and manager for several circuses during his career. In
1873, he purchased one-tenth interest in Howes’ Great London Circus, along with James E.
Kelley. Low attendance and high costs contributed to the demise of this circus at the end of the
1876 season. The circus was sold to Cooper and Bailey who continued to employ Barnum.
REV. JOHN BAYLEY (1814-1880)
John Bayley, a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was born in 1814 in
Stafford, England. He came to America in 1836. He was converted to Christianity in 1839 and
joined the Virginia Conference. He served as minister in Richmond, Petersburg, and Lynchburg,
and surrounding counties. He was the author of several books and pamphlets. He died in 1880
in Lynchburg and is buried at Bayley’s Chapel in Madison Heights, Virginia.

LEONIE DOSS COCKE (1915-2008) FAMILY PAPERS (Cont’d.)
LEONIE DOSS COCKE (1915-2008)
Leonie Doss was born 9 June 1915 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the daughter of
Robert Lester Doss and Maude Leslie Hardy. In 1936, she married Brice Tinsley Cocke, son of
Winbern Cocke and Helen Martha Owen. She was co-author, with Virginia Webb Cocke, of
Cockes and Cousins. Leonie Doss Cocke died 31 August 2008 in Lynchburg, Virginia, and was
buried in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
THOMAS W. COCKE (1819-1888)
Thomas Cocke (no middle name but used initial W with Thomas) was born 10 April
1819 and died 8 February 1888. He was buried in the Wagner Graveyard, Pittsylvania County,
near Gretna, Virginia, known earlier as Whittles Depot. He owned over a thousand acres of land
at the time of his death. He did not believe in slavery and never owned one. When he needed
help on the farm, he would hire from neighbors. During the Civil War he was a prison guard of
Federal prisoners near Danville, Virginia. Thomas W. Cocke was a very progressive farmer and
planter. Among his papers are receipts for improved machinery for both farm and home. He
was a tobacco planter and had an improved orchard. He had accounts with merchants in
Lynchburg and Danville. Hundreds of receipts are marked “paid in full”, this being one of his
strictest policies.
