Virginia Federation of Business and Professional Women’s clubs, held in Lynchburg in
May, 1924.
LYNCHBURG BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S CLUB
While mobilizing for World War I, the U.S. Government recognized the need for
a cohesive group to coordinate identification of women's available skills and experience.
A Women's War Council, financed through a federal grant, was established by the War
Department to organize the resources of professional women. The National Federation of
Business and Professional Women's Clubs (BPW) was founded on July 15, 1919.
An organizational meeting that led to the formation of the Virginia Federation of
Business and Professional Women’s Clubs was held in Richmond, Virginia, in June
1919, from which four charter clubs – Danville, Lynchburg, Richmond, and Roanoke –
were formed.
“Each club affiliated with the Virginia Federation is a self-governing, nonpartisan, non-sectarian group of business and professional women banded together to set
and maintain a higher standard for women in the business and professional world.
“Through the Education Committee the Club endeavors to impress upon the
school girl the necessity for, at least, a High School Education before entering a business
school.
“The Scholarship and Loan fund of the Club provides the means for ambitious
girls to secure the necessary preparation for a successful business or professional career.”
Throughout the years, three major issues shaped BPW's legislative agenda:
elimination of sex discrimination in employment, the principle of equal pay, and the need
for a comprehensive equal rights amendment.

PIEDMONT LITERARY SOCIETY (1976-2009)
The Piedmont Literary Society is an “organization of people interested in the
creation and appreciation of literature as an art form.” The aim of the Society is to
encourage students, writers, and the public at large to write and appreciate all forms of
literature. The Society began in 1976 when it was determined that a creative writing
publication was needed in Piedmont Virginia. Items were created by writers and were
published in the Piedmont Literary Review at no charge. Periodic meetings are held both
in the Piedmont area of Virginia and Virginia Beach and other areas of the State.
Membership is open to all, with Virginia members of the Society having voting
privileges. The Lynchburg Chapter of the Society was the only active group of the
Society as of 2004.

LYNCHBURG ACADEMY OF MEDICINE
The Lynchburg Academy of Medicine was organized on February 14, 1893, by a
group of seventeen physicians in Lynchburg, and was associated with the Medical
Society of Virginia. In the early 1900s, the Academy began to expand its membership. In
1914, it was expanded to become the Lynchburg and Campbell County Medical Society.
The Academy was incorporated in 1932. Locally, the Academy was instrumental in
creating a joint hospital board to coordinate the resources of the three hospitals in the
city. The group also supported the establishment of medical library services.

LYNCHBURG HISTORICAL MUSEUM
The Lynchburg Historical Museum was organized by the Woman's Club of
Lynchburg in 1933, and opened to the public on 15 December 1934. A room in City Hall
was offered by City Council for this purpose.
During World War II, the museum was closed and its contents were stored in the Fort
Hill Fire Station. After several attempts to reopen, and with the Woman's Club giving up
the project, the new museum housed in the old Court House finally reopened on 16
November 1963. It was sponsored by the Lynchburg Historical Society.
Today, the City of Lynchburg through the Department of Libraries and Museums
operates the museum.

The Lynchburg Historical Foundation, Inc. was formed in 1972, out of the merger of
the Lynchburg Historical Society and the Historic Lynchburg Foundation. The
Lynchburg Historical Society had been formed in 1934 out of the desire of several

The United Society of Christian Endeavor was organized 2 February 1881 in Portland,

THE ROTARY CLUB OF LYNCHBURG
The Rotary Club of Lynchburg, Virginia was organized on 3 February 1917 and
admitted to Rotary International on 1 March 1917. Rotary International is a worldwide
organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service,
encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in
the world. The Rotary Club of Lynchburg, No. 280, has participated in local and
international projects including a bone marrow donor program, a world-wide polio
eradication project, and a Sister City program. Fund-raising activities include Café Bon
Ami, held during the local arts festival, and “Living Large with Leprechauns” held on St.
Patrick’s Day.
Of all of the projects the Rotary Club of Lynchburg has undertaken since it was
chartered in 1917, perhaps the most unique was the care, adoption, and education of the
seven orphan children of the Henry Family of Bedford County. After moving the family
to Lynchburg, the children attended Lynchburg schools, were befriended by “Rotary
Dads” and their wives, and made friends with many children. With the benefits of a trust
fund established at a local bank, Rotarians decided after six years it was best to send the
children to “schools that best suited their interests and abilities.” Rotary paid tuition and
room expenses and the students worked to earn their board. During the years when the
Henrys were in college, the homes of several Rotarians were always open to them at
holiday times. On July 16, 1940, a report stated that all seven of the Henry children had
completed their education and that the Club's obligation had been fulfilled. The Henry
Family Trust Fund was combined with the regular Student Loan Fund.

of a physiology exam given in 1896, an invitation to and program for the 1945 graduation
ceremony, and newspaper clippings about the school are also included in the collection.

NEW LONDON ACADEMY
The oldest secondary school in Virginia, New London Academy was chartered by the
General Assembly in 1795. It first operated as a private classical school for young men.
Francis EPPES, a nephew of Thomas JEFFERSON, was a student at the Academy. In
1879, the school became coeducational.
Although originally funded by local subscription, a lottery was held in 1797 to raise
money to erect buildings and to establish a permanent fund for the support of the
Academy. Lotteries were held for fifty years for the Academy and were its chief source
of revenue.
In 1887 the Academy became part of the public school system. In 1892, the Academy
held the first specialized summer training school for teachers in Virginia. In 1910, the
Academy was the first to offer classes in agriculture and home economics. The Academy
was eventually changed to an elementary school in 1964.
In 1971, the Academy was named a historic landmark and was placed on the Virginia
Historic Register. In 1972, it was placed on the National Historic Register. The oldest
remaining building of the Academy was constructed ca. 1837 and was restored by a grant
from the General Assembly of Virginia.
