RIVERMONT STREET RAILWAY COMPANY MINUTE BOOK
The minute book records the general operations of the company involved with
purchases of land and maintenance of equipment and powerhouse. The accompanying
pamphlet contains the act of incorporation (1891), a deed of trust for the company to
Lynchburg Trust and Savings Bank, and a statement of assets and balance sheet (1892).
RIVERMONT STREET RAILWAY COMPANY
Facing financial difficulties in 1891, the Rivermont Land Company
divested itself of its streetcar system which was reorganized and renamed the Lynchburg
and Rivermont Street Railway Company. The Company was incorporated Dec. 17, 1891
“to construct, own, purchase, hold and operate a street railway in the counties of
Campbell and Bedford and in the city of Lynchburg.” The capital stock of the company
was not to exceed $200,000. As the Company expanded its streetcar system from its
original Rivermont route through the city of Lynchburg, the name was changed to The
Lynchburg and Rivermont Street Railway Company on March 24, 1892. The corporate
name was again changed to Lynchburg Traction and Light Company on April 30, 1901.

AMERICAN RED CROSS CANTEEN SERVICES (1914-1918)
An American Red Cross Canteen was maintained at Lynchburg's train terminal
throughout World War I, providing meals for train troops who were being transported
from bases in Texas to embarkation points on the East Coast. As a result, Lynchburg
became known as "Lunchburg". The Lynchburg Canteen also served hospital trains
sending home soldiers injured in France.
Papers in the collection give information about numbers of people and quantities of
food and drink served. The collection also includes photographs of Red Cross and
Canteen volunteers, clippings and letters about the Canteen, and regulations for
conducting the Canteen. Also included are Red Cross banners, camp magazines and
copies of German propaganda proclamations posted in France and Belgium.
