GREEN H. NOWLIN (1845-1914) TOBACCO SALES ACCOUNT BOOK
The account book is a record of the sales of dark-fired and bright leaf tobacco by
Green H. NOWLIN at the Friends' Tobacco Warehouse in Lynchburg, Virginia. The
sales record includes the date of the sale, the name of the grower, the quantity sold, the
amount paid, initials of the buyers and extra charges (commission, warehouse, freight).
GREEN H. NOWLIN (1845-1914)
Green H. NOWLIN, son of Peyton W. NOWLIN, was born 13 January 1845 near
Chamois Depot, Osage County, Missouri. The NOWLINs moved to Virginia ca. 1849
and settled at Brookneal, in Campbell County. During the Civil War, Green H.
NOWLIN served on the railroad from Richmond to Danville, Virginia. In 1869, he
moved to Lynchburg and was in the grocery and tobacco commission business with his
uncle, B. H. NOWLIN. He became a stockholder in the Lynchburg Tobacco Company
and was later made vice-president. He was also president of the Lynchburg Coal and
Coke Company and of the Eureka Coal and Coke Company. He was director of the
Lynchburg Colliery Company, the Dietz Colliery Company and the Premier Pocahontas
Colliery Company.
Green H. NOWLIN married, first, on 6 October 1875, Lelia PENDLETON daughter
of Shephard PENDLETON. After the death of his first wife, he married his sister-in-law,
Lucie S. PENDLETON on 31 December 1902.
Green H. NOWLIN died on 14 March 1914 and was survived by his wife, four sons
from his first marriage and one son from his second marriage. He was buried in the
Presbyterian Cemetery in Lynchburg.
