LYNCHBURG GARDEN CLUB
The Lynchburg Garden Club was organized in 1922, with Josephine KINNIER as first
president. In 1923, the Club became a member of the Garden Club of Virginia. Through
the years, the Club has participated in beautification projects for the City of Lynchburg.
In 1926, the club planted sugar maples on Peakland Place. In the 1930s, members of the
Club planted hundreds of dogwoods from Boonsboro Road to Locke’s Mountain. In
1944, the Club was awarded the MASSIE Medal for "distinguished achievement in
gardening" in the preparation of the garden at the Miller-Claytor house, an historic
dwelling in Lynchburg. In 1954, the Lynchburg Garden Club joined with the Hillside
Garden Club in the promotion of Historic Garden Week, an annual event in the State of
Virginia.
Operation: Plant-A-Tree, a citywide recycling program, gained national recognition and
served as a prototype for similar efforts across the country. Since 1990, proceeds from
Plant-A-Tree have underwritten the costs of some 4,000 trees along the streets of
Lynchburg. Maintenance of the Charles Gillette Garden at the Miller-Claytor House in
Riverside Park has been an ongoing project since 1935. A stone patio laid with old stone
donated by the City was installed in the garden in 2012 for which the Club was awarded
the prestigious Common Wealth Award by the Garden Club of Virginia. The Club also
planned and planted the Gazebo Garden in Riverside Park and received a commendation
from Lynchburg City Council for its efforts in the Park.

was chartered 2 October 1895, in Lynchburg. Among its early projects was the placing
of a bronze marker honoring John LYNCH, founder of the town of Lynchburg. The
Chapter has also contributed books and microfilm to Jones Memorial Library, and
organized the Charles Lynch Chapter, Children of the American Revolution. Two other
chapters were formed by Blue Ridge Chapter, Lynchburg Chapter in 1909, and Poplar
Forest Chapter in 1913. In 1970, the Chapter sponsored the publication of Marriages of

WOMAN’S CLUB OF LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA
"The Woman's Club of Lynchburg had its beginning in 1903 when eleven civicminded women gathered to study Parliamentary Procedure. Their enthusiasm grew with
their knowledge and the decided to begin an organization that that would further civic,
cultural and educational endeavors throughout the city.
"In 1907, Mrs. James R. (Alice) Kyle, the Club's fourth president, spearheaded the
establishment of the Virginia Federation of Woman's Clubs (VFWC). Mrs. Kyle, elected
first president of the VFWC, is still affectionately remembered as "Mother Kyle". She set
as the Federation's main objective the improvement of the Virginia's educational system.
The finest outcome of this objective was realized with the establishment of Mary
Washington College as a women's coordinate to the University of Virginia."
Philanthropic projects adopted by the Club throughout the years include:
donations to the Patrick Henry Boys’ Plantation, the establishment of a center for senior
citizens, sending delegates to Girls’ State, work on air pollution control and conservation
programs. An educational endowment fund was begun in 1969 as the Club’s primary and
ongoing project.
A poetry contest sponsored by the Club’s Literary Department in 1951 led to the
formation of The Poetry Workshop as a division of The Woman’s Club. This resulted in
a series of annual Poetry Festivals in collaboration with the Poetry Society of Virginia.

TIMBROOK WOMAN'S CLUB
The Timbrook Woman's Club held its organizational meeting on 17 November 1959
at the Timberlake Lodge. The Club was accepted as a member of the Garden Club of
Virginia in 1960. Since its organization, the Club has engaged in many civic activities,
among which are sponsoring students to Girls' State, providing educational scholarships,
assisting with the establishment of a new fire department, and organizing a clothing bank
for citizens of the area.
The Timbrook Woman's Club has participated in programs aiding senior citizens of
the area, including fuel assistance, meals, and nursing home visitation. The crisis
housing program, a continuing service project of the Club, provides safe temporary
shelter, food, clothing, counseling and referrals to those adults and/or children in need of
such emergency services.

HILLSIDE GARDEN CLUB
The Hillside Garden Club, first known as the Junior Garden Club, was organized in
Lynchburg, Virginia, in July 1935. Originally with a membership limited to 20 members,
the Club became a member of the Garden Club of Virginia in 1953 and increased its
membership to fifty members. In 1954, the Club joined with the Lynchburg Garden Club
in the promotion of Historic Garden Week, an annual event in the State of Virginia.
Through the years, the Club has participated in beautification projects in the city, in
operating a nature camp, and in the restoration of the Aviary in Miller Park.
Hillside has embraced various projects, including the grounds at Point of Honor,
the Aviary, the Old City Cemetery and Lynchburg Grows.
A major focus is Harlem Renaissance poet Anne Spencer’s garden, described by
the late poet as “half my world.” The club began restoring the garden in 1983 and now
maintains it. In 2009, the Garden Club of Virginia chose the project for its Common
Wealth Award, Hillside’s second such award.
