WILLIAM L. CANDLER LETTER TO CHARLES AUGUST EVARD, 1849
William L. Candler, of Staunton, Virginia, writes to his brother-in-law and sister,
complaining about his life in Staunton, “the dullest place I ever saw.” He asks about his mother
and Elizabeth [perhaps a sister] and requests that John [perhaps a brother] send him a Lynchburg
newspaper.
CHARLES AUGUST EVARD (1819-1853
Charles August Evard, watchmaker of Lynchburg, Virginia, was born 25 May 1817 in
Switzerland. He immigrated to the United States on 8 March 1839 and settled in Lynchburg. He
was admitted as a citizen on 3 July 1848. He married Catherine Candler on 15 July 1845.
Charles August Evard died on 4 December 1853 and is buried in the Presbyterian
Cemetery in Lynchburg.
[Nothing further is known at present concerning William L. Candler, other than being the
brother of Catherine Candler Evard.]
