FRANCES C. ADAMS DEYERLE (1898-1994)
Frances C. ADAMS, daughter of Thomas ADAMS and Mary Florence BIAS, was
born 16 November 1898, in Amherst County, Virginia. The family moved to Lynchburg
ca. 1907, where she attended Biggers and Monroe schools, and was graduated from
Lynchburg High School in 1920. She was personal secretary to E. C. GLASS,
Superintendent of the Lynchburg public schools beginning in 1920, and served in that
same capacity for four other superintendents until her retirement in 1968.
Upon her retirement, Frances ADAMS married "a former sweetheart," Thomas Byron
DEYERLE, son of Thomas Lee DEYERLE and Lillian DAME of Salem, Virginia.
During her tenure as secretary to the several superintendents of schools, Frances
ADAMS kept minutes for the School Board. These minutes formed the basis for her
manuscript for a book on the history of public schools in Lynchburg. The book, "A
History of Education in Lynchburg," originally scheduled to be published in 1979, was
never published. A revised publication, "A Legacy of Learning: The Lynchburg Public
Schools 1871-1986," was published in 1987. Janet SHAFFER, a free-lance writer, was
commissioned to write the history, serving as editor of the notes and draft of Mrs.
DEYERLE.
Frances C. (ADAMS) DEYERLE died 24 April 1994 in Lynchburg and was buried in
Spring Hill Cemetery.
