LUSHINGTON COLLECTION
The collection consists of a small body of correspondence, addressed to Dr.
Augustus Nathaniel Lushington, veterinarian of Lynchburg, Va., from various clients. A
few items in the collection are letters of complaint about charges made by Lushington
when treating animals. Two of the items concern an accident that the doctor experienced
in 1910. There is also one letter from a teacher discussing the behavior of Lushington’s
daughter, Drucilla, in school.
AUGUSTUS NATHANIEL LUSHINGTON (1869-1939)
Augustus Nathaniel Lushington was born 1 August 1869 on Trinidad, the son of
William Lushington and Mollie Dickerson. He attended teacher-training school and
worked as a teacher on Trinidad. He left Trinidad in 1889 and landed in New York. He
moved to Binghamton, New York and married Elizabeth Gavino Hubert. He enrolled in
Cornell University and received a degree in agriculture in 1894. He graduated from the
University of Pennsylvania veterinary school and established a practice in Pennsylvania
before moving to Lynchburg, Virginia. He worked as veterinarian in Lynchburg and the
surrounding areas. He also served as city meat inspector and probation officer in
Lynchburg. After his first wife died, he married Rosetta Peach Mason in 1937.
Augustus Nathaniel Lushington died 12 February 1939 and is buried in Forest
Hill Burial Park in Lynchburg.
