FLORENCE CRITTENTON HOME, LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA
Charles H. Crittenton of New York established the first Florence Crittenton
Mission in 1883 as a memorial to his daughter who died at the age of four, in 1882. He
hoped to develop a practical way to “lessen suffering and sorrow for girlhood in general”
and concluded that the greatest need was a shelter which might aid the unmarried mother
during the weeks before and after the birth of her child.
The Lynchburg Home was founded in 1894 and continued its operation until
1981. Its purpose was to provide a home, confidential care, thoughtful counseling, and
hospitalization for the unmarried pregnant girl, and to help her regain her place in society
as a constructive and useful citizen.
