The collection consists of six panoramic views of Lynchburg, Virginia, as seen from
Amherst County.
1112a Ink wash – Kollner, 1845
“Born in Dusseldorf, Germany, August Kollner Immigrated to America in 1839 and
settled in Philadelphia. He published etchings, engravings and lithographs of prize animals,
uniforms and city maps. His paintings include watercolors of German and American cities, first
in light, thin watercolor and later in thick dark tones. Kollner died in Philadelphia in 1883.” –

“Born in the Rhineland in 1820 and trained in Dusseldorf and Dresden, Edward Beyer
came to America in 1849. His main interest was landscape...” – Publisher’s note.

“This earliest known panoramic photo of Lynchburg was taken shortly after the
construction of the long N&W freight depot and shows rare views of the Virginia and Tennessee
station, the toll house at the bridge, the roundhouse, the canal aqueduct across Blackwater Creek,
and part of the first Union Station behind Langhorne Mills.” – Publisher’s note.
