HILLSIDE GARDEN CLUB
The Hillside Garden Club, first known as the Junior Garden Club, was organized in
Lynchburg, Virginia, in July 1935. Originally with a membership limited to 20 members,
the Club became a member of the Garden Club of Virginia in 1953 and increased its
membership to fifty members. In 1954, the Club joined with the Lynchburg Garden Club
in the promotion of Historic Garden Week, an annual event in the State of Virginia.
Through the years, the Club has participated in beautification projects in the city, in
operating a nature camp, and in the restoration of the Aviary in Miller Park.
Hillside has embraced various projects, including the grounds at Point of Honor,
the Aviary, the Old City Cemetery and Lynchburg Grows.
A major focus is Harlem Renaissance poet Anne Spencer’s garden, described by
the late poet as “half my world.” The club began restoring the garden in 1983 and now
maintains it. In 2009, the Garden Club of Virginia chose the project for its Common
Wealth Award, Hillside’s second such award.
