The collection includes presidents' reports, histories of the club, celebration programs,
photograph albums for the 35th anniversary of the club in 1957, and microfilmed records
of the club. Also included are souvenirs of the visit of the French "Merci" Train to
Lynchburg, Virginia, on 8 February 1949. The Merci Train toured the United States in
1949 to bring thanks from the French people to the United States for its help in World
War II. The visit to Lynchburg was planned by the Lions Club and the collection
includes photographs of the visit, a broadcast record of speeches given and several books
about France.

LIONS CLUB, LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA
The Lions Club of Lynchburg, Virginia, was organized in 1921. Also known as the
"Lynchburg Host Lions Club" and the "Downtown Lions Club," the group was chartered
as "The Lions Club of Lynchburg" in 1922. The organization has participated in
numerous service projects in its history, including summer camping programs for youth,
the organi-zation of the Lynchburg Safety Council, work with the blind, assisting in
community fundraising campaigns for the Community Chest, the Red Cross, and the
YMCA.
