LITTLE GARDEN CLUB
The Little Garden Club, the oldest federated garden club in Lynchburg, was organized
9 October 1924 in Lynchburg, Virginia. The stated goal of the organization was "to
promote all forms of garden activities in the community." The first major civic project
undertaken by the Club was the beautification of elementary school grounds. The Club
was also interested in establishing and maintaining a bird and wild life sanctuary in
Lynchburg.
In 1938, the Little Garden Club was permitted to plant berry-bearing trees and shrubs
in a section of Riverside Park. Later, the Club received approval to establish the entire
20-acre area as a bird sanctuary. On 25 May 1940, the sanctuary was dedicated.
Also in 1938, the Little Garden Club joined with seven other garden clubs in
Lynchburg to form the Lynchburg Council of Garden Clubs.
In ca. 1964, the Little Garden Club organized a high school gardeners club known as
the "Upsa-Daisies." The group won State awards for its yearbook and scrapbook.
