LYNCHBURG ART CLUB
The Lynchburg Art Club (Art League) was founded in 1895 by Bernhard GUTMANN,
an artist and a recent immigrant from Bremen, Germany. Many of his adult art students
became members of the Club. Mr. GUTMANN, first president of the Club, was also
instrumental in establishing art classes for the public schools of Lynchburg.
The Art Club was dormant for a number of years and was revived in 1926. In 1928, the
Lynchburg Art Club was organized and was incorporated in 1961.
In 1932, members of the Lynchburg Art Club sought to establish the Lynchburg Civic
Art League, whose purpose was "to encourage the development of art in persons in all
walks of life who were over sixteen years of age." Incorporated in 1935, the League
sponsored annual exhibitions of artwork of the artists of the area. Following the death of
Miss Georgia MORGAN, a driving force for the Civic Art League, the League was
disbanded and the Lynchburg Art Club took over the exhibitions.
In 1961, the Lynchburg Art Club secured a permanent home at 1011 Rivermont Avenue
in Lynchburg. In June 1961, the Club was host to the exhibit of the Vaasa Art Club of
Vaasa, Finland.
In addition to periodic exhibits, the Lynchburg Art Club sponsors and conducts classes in
various art media and its members have won numerous awards.
