SUBURBAN WOMAN’S CLUB OF LYNCHBURG
The Lynchburg Suburban Woman's Club was organized on 15 October 1959 in Lynchburg,
Virginia. The objective of this club was “to stimulate and promote the cultural, educational,
social and civic interests of its members.” In its first year, the Club sponsored a workshop in
parliamentary law and established scholarships at E. C. Glass High School, Virginia Baptist
Hospital and Lynchburg General Hospital.
The Club was instrumental in organizing the
Rivermont Senior Center in 1960 and the Lynchburg Chapter of American Field Service
(Foreign Exchange Student Program). In 1966, the Club was instrumental in establishing a
youth center and sponsored activities for the young people of the community between the ages of
fifteen and nineteen.
In 1963, the Club sponsored an address by Perle Mesta, former ambassador to Luxembourg,
“noted for being the ‘hostess with the mostess’ in Washington and elsewhere.”
The primary focus of the Club has been community service and members have given their
support to many local service organizations.
