POTTER ESTATE PAPERS
The collection includes estate papers of James Potter and consists primarily of
receipts for moneys paid to descendants by executors. Of special interest are deeds for
Colerain Plantation and Tweedside Plantation enumerating slaves, with ages and
occupations.
JAMES POTTER (1793-1862)
James Potter, the son of John Potter and Catherine Fuller, was born Aug. 29,
1793 in Charleston, S.C. He married Sarah Jones Grimes, the daughter of John Wesley
Grimes and Catherine Jones Glen on 12 February 1806, in Savannah, Ga. Potter died 25
January 1862, in Savannah, Ga., and was buried in Princeton, Mercer Co., N.J.
JOHN DUVAL LANGHORNE (1824-1915)
John Duval Langhorne, the son of John Trotter Langhorne and Elizabeth
Baxter Payne, was born 1 Jan 1824 in Maysville, Mason Co., Ky. He married Mary
Marshall Potter on 30 June 1853 in Princeton, Mercer Co., New Jersey. She was the
daughter of James Potter and Sarah Jones Grimes. Following the death of his father-inlaw in 1862, Langhorne served as co-executor of the estate. Following the death of his
wife in 1861, he married Anne Catherine Tayloe on 16 December 1863 in Roanoke, Va.,
the daughter of George Plater Tayloe and Mary Elizabeth Langhorne. He died 25
November 1915, in Washington, D.C., and is buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in
Washington.
