The collection includes a ledger book and a cashbook (1869-1871) from the tobacco
business of John Bell Tilden WINFREE, of Lynchburg, Virginia.
JOHN BELL TILDEN WINFREE (1829-1918)
John Bell Tilden WINFREE, son of Christopher WINFREE and Cornelia Myer
TILDEN, was born 8 May 1829 near Lynchburg, Virginia. He married 16 December
1856 Ann E. PENNINGTON, daughter of Thomas PENNINGTON and Mary ADKINS,
of Sussex County.
John Bell Tilden WINFREE was engaged in the tobacco business in Lynchburg until
his retirement in 1886. He was active in the Memorial Methodist Church from its
beginning, serving as chairman of the board of stewards, as a teacher in the sunday
school, as a lay member of the Virginia Methodist Conference and as president of the
Preacher's Relief Society. He also served as a trustee for the Lynchburg school system
when it was first organized in 1870.
John Bell Tilden WINFREE died 4 November 1918 at his home in Lynchburg and
was buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery.

The name "John B. Winfree" is recorded on the inside covers of the account books, along with the name
"R. Winfree." This is most probably Robert Winfree (1865-1928) who succeeded his father, John Bell
