OLD DOMINION CHAPTER, UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE
CONFEDERACY
In 1896, Ruth H. EARLY, a member of the Lucy Minor Otey Chapter, United
Daughters of the Confederacy (now the Kirkwood Otey Chapter, UDC), met with other
interested women and organized the Old Dominion Chapter, UDC, in Lynchburg,
Virginia. The group was chartered on 9 July 1896. Among the stated purposes of the
Chapter were the "caring for veterans, collecting and preserving relics of the war, and
perpetuating the memory of Confederate heroes by promoting friendship among their
relatives and survivors." The Chapter worked toward the erection of the soldier's
monument on Court Street and acquired the old fortifications, known as Fort Early, to
preserve a part of the war history of Lynchburg.
