RESOLUTION OF CITY COUNCIL (1864)
The City Council of Lynchburg, Va., James O. Williams, Clerk, issued a resolution of
thanks to Lieut. General Jubal A. Early, Maj. Gen. John C. Breckenridge and soldiers under their
command for services in driving the enemy from “our borders” ; to Brig. Gen. F. T. Nichols,
Commandant of the post “for efforts to meet, with the local forces, the advancing foe” ; to Maj.
Gen. D.H. Hill and Brig. Gen. Harry T. Hay’s [sic] forces for organizing local forces and
“constructing the lines of defence” ; to Lieut. Col. R. E. Burke, 2nd Louisiana and E.J. Hoge
“though themselves on crutches” placed in command of the convalescents ; to officers and cadets
of Virginia Military Institute “for their promptness in the hour of danger” ; to Brig. Gen. John
McCausland and forces under his command for “opposing for ten days the march of greatly
superior forces” ; and to Maj. Gen. Wade Hampton and Maj. Gen. Fitzhugh and their forces for
the defeat of Sheridan “preventing a junction of the enemy’s forces at this place.”
