MRS. N.W. FLOYD’S HOUSEHOLD IN THE LATTER PART OF THE CIVIL WAR
The manuscript describes the wartime situation of the Floyd family who lived at
Brookfield, their estate near Lynchburg, Virginia. During the war, the home had been used as a
hospital. Dr. N.W. Floyd and his wife decided to stay at their home when Lynchburg was under
threat of attack. Their daughter, Letitia, recently married to Capt. John C. Featherston, was sent
with the family silver to the home of an aunt, Mary Lightfoot Garland in Lynchburg. The silver
was lowered to the bottom of a well to protect it. At Brookfield, the soldiers vandalized much of
the estate before leaving. The manuscript is attributed to Mrs. James A. Scott of Lynchburg.
