LEGAL NOTES OF CASES IN AND AROUND LYNCHBURG
The notebook, which has the date 11 November 1901 on the inside cover, contains
notes involving legal cases concerning parties in the Lynchburg area. The notes were kept
by Armistead Ragland Long, attorney, of Lynchburg.
ARMISTEAD RAGLAND LONG (1859-1934)
Armistead Ragland Long was born in Henrico County, VA, on 2 August 1859. He
was the son of John Cralle Long and Josephine Hardin Ragland and was raised in
Scottsville and Charlottesville. He received his education at the school of Major Horace
W. Jones and then at Richmond College, where he finished with a Master of Arts degree
in 1878. In the fall of that year, he entered the University of Virginia and studied law. In
1881, he left UVA and taught in Accomac County. The next year he returned to the
University and finished his law work.
Upon completion of his legal studies, he practiced law in Lynchburg. In 1892, he
became a partner in Harrison & Long. Among his community activities were included
being a founder of the Sphex Club and a trustee of Jones Memorial Library. In 1901, he
compiled an annotated edition of the Virginia Constitution of 1869.
Mr. Long married Elizabeth Tunstall Hickson on 4 October 1899. He died on 15
January 1934, and was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, VA.
