STOCK BOOK & MISCELLANY
The stock book contains unsold stock shares and stubs for sold shares listing stock
certificate number and to whom the share was sold. In the miscellany volume are
included some of the stock certificates plus a draft of the deed of incorporation. The
proprietor was Dr. Samuel Garland Slaughter, of Lynchburg. The first listing for the
institution was in the City Directory of Lynchburg, VA for 1907. The last such listing
was in 1908, and in 1909 Dr. Slaughter is listed as the proprietor of the Panto Sanitarium.
Among the owners of shares in the corporation are some of Lynchburg's major
businessmen and Dr. Slaughter's relatives.
SAMUEL GARLAND SLAUGHTER {1861-1915)
Samuel Garland Slaughter was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on 10 July 1861, the son
of John F. and Mary Harker Slaughter. He was educated at the Bellevue and Episcopal
High Schools and did his undergraduate work at the University of Virginia. His medical
degree was obtained from the University of the City of New York, followed by practice
in the Bellevue Hospital of New York City. He married Mary W. Richardson, of
Monroe, Louisiana, on 26 November 1890.
Dr. Slaughter went on to general practice in Superior, Wisconsin, and later returned to
Lynchburg in 1894, where he set up a general practice and was assistance surgeon to the
N & W Railroad. In 1907, he established the Physico-therapeutic Institution in
Lynchburg. Dr. Slaughter gave up his general practice to specialize in electrotherapeutics.
His death on 17 November 1915 was due in part to x-ray burns which he had received
some years prior. S.G. Slaughter was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery.
