ROBERT A. COGHILL – RESPONSE TO A PETITION
Seventy-eight (78) voters of Amherst County, Virginia, petitioned Robert A. Coghill to
“announce himself a candidate to represent the County in the next House of Delegates.” This
single-sheet broadside includes the names of the voters and Mr. Coghill’s response on 16
September 1879 in agreeing to present himself as a candidate for office.

ROBERT ALDRIDGE COGHILL (1821-1889)
Robert Aldridge Coghill was born 11 November 1821 in, Essex County, Virginia,
the son of Richard Coghill and Ann Aldridge. A lawyer and politician, he served in the Virginia
State Senate 1857-1865, representing Amherst County and served in the House of Delegates
1871-1882 representing Amherst and Nelson counties. Mr. Coghill died 7 March 1889, at his
home in Amherst County and was buried in Winton Plantation cemetery, Clifford, Amherst
County, Virginia.
