A. ROBBINS TELEGRAM TO POWELL GLASS, 1942
Telegram from A. Robbins, President of the Virginia Press Association, Hopewell, Va.,
to Powell Glass, Associate Publisher, The News and Advance, Lynchburg, Va., concerning
State scrap drive, naming Glass to State Committee and asking Glass to attend a luncheon
meeting of the committee with Governor Darden. Included with the telegram is the Bulletin of
the Virginia Press Association [Richmond, Va., vol. 24 no. 9 Sept. 1942] containing articles by
both Robbins and Glass concerning the success of the scrap drive.

AUGUSTUS ROBBINS, JR. (1899-1983)
Augustus Robbins, Jr., was born 12 May1899 in Hickman, Fulton County, Kentucky. He
was the son of Augustus Robbins and Bauer Knoelder. He served in World War I and was
owner and editor of the Hopewell (Va.) News.
Robbins died 2 April 1983 in Arlington, Virginia and was buried in Merchants Hope
Memorial Gardens, Prince George County, Virginia.
POWELL GLASS (1886-1945)
Powell Glass was born 9 October 1886, in Lynchburg, Virginia, the son of Carter Glass
and Aurelia McDearmon Caldwell. He was educated in the public schools of Lynchburg and at
Washington and Lee University. After leaving college, he followed the family tradition by
joining the staff of the Lynchburg newspapers as a reporter. In 1912 he became managing editor.
Glass was granted a leave of absence to enter the Army during the first World War. He
served in France as a Major of the First Battalion of the 317th Infantry. At the armistice, he was
assigned to the office of public relations on the staff of the American commission to negotiate
peace. He retired from active service with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Returning to Lynchburg, he resumed his position on the News & Advance, later
becoming managing editor, associate publisher and general manager. He also served as the State
chairman of the Associated Press in Virginia.
Powell Glass died 8 July 1945 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Richmond. He was buried in
Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg.
