PRESS COMMENTS ON THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF JUNIUS EDGAR WEST FOR
GOVERNOR

JUNIUS EDGAR WEST (1866-1947)
Junius Edgar West, the son of Henry Thomas West and Susan Cox, was born in Sussex
County, Virginia, on 12 January 1866. He was educated in Sussex County and attended the
Suffolk Collegiate Institute in Suffolk, Virginia. He attended college at the University of North
Carolina and studied law at both Washington and Lee University and the University of Virginia.
He was Superintendent of Sussex County schools in 1889 and suggested innovations to improve
the system in Sussex.
West formed an insurance business with his brother, John West. Later he joined the firm
of L.P. Harper and became the junior partner in the firm of Harper and West. Following
Harper’s death in 1906, the firm became West and Withers, with J.T. Withers as junior partner.
On 17 January 1903, West married Margaret Olive Beale, the daughter of Rev. and Mrs.
Edwin W. Beale of Suffolk.
West was active in local politics and was elected to Suffolk City Council in 1896. He
served on the staff of Governor Claude A. Swanson from 1906 until 1910. In 1910, he was
elected to the Virginia House of Delegates and in 1912 to the Virginia State Senate, where he
served for ten years. He was elected Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 1922 and again in 1926.
Always active in church and civic affairs, West was, for a time, an owner and publisher
of the Suffolk Herald, a forerunner of the Suffolk News Herald. He was also a director of the
Retail Merchants Association and a director of the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce.
Junius Edgar West died on 1 January 1947 in Richmond, Virginia. He was buried in
Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suffolk on January 3, 1947.
