STEWART – WALKER FAMILIES
Norman Stewart (1790-1856), born in Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland, emigrated
to Virginia before 1806 and engaged in the business of buying and selling leaf tobacco in
Richmond, Virginia. His nephews, John Stewart (1806-1885) and Daniel K. Stewart
(1810-1889), later emigrated and joined him in the tobacco business. John Walker
(1794-1836) and his brother, David Walker (1799-1845), of Rothesay, also nephews of
Norman Stewart, came to Virginia ca. 1821 and settled in Lynchburg, where they
engaged in the tobacco business. In addition to the family business in Virginia, they also
had operations in New Orleans, Louisiana, and in Clarksville, Tennessee.
