LUCILE BARROW TURNER (1895-1979)
Lucile BARROW, daughter of Herbert C. BARROW and Loula POOLE, was born 8
November 1895 in Blackstone, Brunswick County, Virginia. She studied music at
Emerson College of Oratory, at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston,
Massachusetts, and at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She married ca. 1917 Lawson W.
TURNER.
In 1929, Lucile Barrow TURNER traveled to New York two days a week to appear on
the Craddock-Terry Shoe Corporation radio show. During World War II, she performed
for troops in hospitals and at debarkation camps. She traveled extensively throughout the
South collecting folk songs.
A prolific song writer, Mrs. TURNER wrote the Bicentennial song for the City of
Lynchburg, as well as the popular "Going Down to Lynchburg Town."
'Cile TURNER was a member of the Colonial Dames of America, the Society of the
First Families of Virginia, Dames Forum Society, the Lynchburg Garden Club, the
Lynchburg Fine Arts Center, the Poplar Forest Chapter of the Daughters of the American
Revolution, and the Bedford Historical Society.
Lucile Barrow TURNER died at her home, Old Elkton Farm, in Forest, Virginia, on 2
July 1979. She was buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg.
