SAMUEL CURTIS THACKSTON (1917-
)
Samuel Curtis Thackston, son of Samuel Henry Thackston and Evie May Baker,
was born 15 June 1917 near Darlington Heights, Prince Edward County, Virginia. He
was graduated from Darlington Heights High School. He served in World War II, 19401945, in the U.S. Army Medical Department as a Radiological Technologist. He was
honorably discharged on 25 January 1945 as a Technical Sergeant. Following his
discharge, he was employed as Chief Radiological Technologist at Alpena General
Hospital, Alpena, Michigan, on 30 July 1945.
Mr. Thackston married (1) Margaret Ann Gusler on 24 December 1948. He
married (2) Ruth Garnham on 14 September 1968.
In June 1950, Mr. Thackston was recalled to active duty in the U.S. Air Force as a
Master Sergeant, X-Ray Section, 7th Medical Squadron, Carswell Air Force Base. He
was honorably discharged from the Air Force in September 1951 and returned to his
employment at Alpena General Hospital. He was Technical Director of the Radiology
Department for thirty-three years, retiring in November 1979.
Mr. Thackston and his wife returned to his native state, building a new home in
Campbell County, where he and his wife enjoyed twenty-two years. They were both
“farm kids,” and enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables.
On days of inclement
weather, genealogy became a very rewarding hobby. He spent many hours at Jones
Memorial Library and appreciated the help given by its capable staff, with special thanks
to Director, Wayne Rhodes. [Thackston to Rhodes, 6 September 2003, Thackston Collection,
