JOHN JOSEPH HUGHES (1857-1928)
John Joseph Hughes, son of John Hughes and Bridget Ann Hagerty, was born 16
July 1857 in Botetourt County, Virginia. He moved with his family to Lynchburg ca.
1860 where his father was a shoemaker. On 16 October 1889, J. J. Hughes married
Susan Virginia Matroni, daughter of Thomas Matroni and Ellen Lavinia Cofflin of
Lynchburg. At the time of his marriage, Hughes was a debt collector and lived just
outside the city. He first appears as owner of the Hill City Stables, 1207-1209 Main
Street, in 1892. By 1894, he had opened the Palace Stables. In 1897, the Palace Livery
Company was incorporated, with Hughes as secretary and treasurer, and his brother-inlaw, J. L. Crist, as president.
In 1902, in addition to continuing the operation of the Palace Livery Company,
John J. Hughes established the first transfer business in Lynchburg which operated as the
Lynchburg Transfer Company. He was also involved in the Paragon Oil and Gasoline
Company, dealers in oil, gasoline, floor dressing, oil and gasoline stoves. In that same
year, he established a poster advertising company known later as the Lynchburg Bill
Posting Company.
By 1906, Hughes had become established as a funeral director, operating the J. J.
Hughes and Company, which was incorporated in 1917 as the Lynchburg Undertaking
Company. Hughes retired from all his business interests in 1918 due to ill health. He
continued to work with his son for a year or so in the Lynchburg Poster Advertising
Company (formerly the Lynchburg Bill Posting Company). He died on 12 July 1928 and
was buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Lynchburg.

JOSEPH EVERETTE FAUBER (1879-1959)
Joseph Everette Fauber, son of William and Mary Alexander Fauber, was born 5
August 1879 in Augusta County, Virginia. He was educated in Augusta County schools
and at Fishburne Military Academy in Waynesboro, Virginia. He married Alma Carter,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Carter of Charlottesville, Virginia, on 26 November
1906.
J. E. Fauber established his first undertaking firm in Charlottesville in 1903. He
came to Lynchburg in 1906 and was associated with W. D. Diuguid in the Diuguid
Funeral Home. During the influenza epidemic, he was sent to a military base to assist
with the burials there. In 1918, he joined the Lynchburg Undertaking Company,
successor to J. J. Hughes and Company. When J. J. Hughes retired in 1919, Fauber
established the J. E. Fauber Funeral Home, serving as operating manager, president, and
later as secretary-treasurer. In 1952, he returned to W. D. Diuguid, Inc., and served as a
funeral director there while continuing to hold office in the Fauber Funeral Home.
Joseph Everette Fauber died 22 February 1959 after a long illness. He was buried
in Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg.

WILLIAM HENRY CHEATHAM (1915-1975)
William Henry Cheatham, son of Walter Beverly Cheatham and Sallie Franklin,
was born on 2 May 1915 at Maple Valley Farm near Sherwill, Campbell County,
Virginia. He was educated in the Campbell County public schools, the Virginia
Commercial College in Lynchburg, and at the Renouard Training School for Embalmers
in New York.
During World War II, W. H. Cheatham served as a hospital corpsman for the U.
S. Navy. In 1942 he was stationed in Richmond, Roanoke, and Abingdon, Virginia, on
recruiting and induction duty until November 1943. During this time he assisted in the
medical examination of more than 31,000 men entering the armed services. In November
1943, he was assigned to the Naval Amphibious Force, Headquarters Company, Lion 6
Battalion, which participated in the invasion and occupation of Guam, Mariana Islands,
where they built and operated U.S. Naval Base Hospital 18. During his duty at the base
hospital, he assisted in the treatment of 18,500 patients, working in various departments
of the hospital.
In 1945, he returned to Lynchburg and purchased the J. E. Fauber, Inc. Funeral
Home. He served as president and chief executive officer of the firm until his death.
When J. E. Fauber died in 1959, Cheatham reorganized the company as the Virginia
Funeral Chapel, Inc.
W. Henry Cheatham married first, Bonnie Jeanne Gallimore, daughter of
McKinley C. Gallimore and Nancy Richardson of Pulaski, Virginia. Following the death
of his wife on 1 January 1967, he married second, in 1968, Ann Elizabeth Rowe of York,
Pennsylvania.
William Henry Cheatham was a member of the National Funeral Directors
Association, the Preferred Funeral Directors International, the Virginia Funeral Directors
Association, and was a founder of the Lynchburg Civitan Club. He was also known
throughout the state as an antique automobile enthusiast. He held positions in local, state,
and national antique automobile clubs. He died 15 June 1975 at his home in Lynchburg.
He was buried in the New Concord Presbyterian church cemetery in Campbell County.
