Eleanor Mae Walters, daughter of Clarence Samuel Walters and Helen LaDonna
Marmet, was born 11 February 1921 in Mansfield, Ohio. She was graduated from the
Mansfield General Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She received a bachelor’s degree
in biology from Ashland College in Ashland, Ohio, and a master’s degree in education
and nursing from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1967, she
earned a doctor of philosophy degree in higher education.
On 11 April 1954, in Casper, Wyoming, Eleanor Walters married James William
Treece, Jr., son of James William Treece and Myrtle Chaney. Together they completed
their education at the University of Minnesota. In the 1980’s, they moved to Lynchburg,
Virginia, where they both taught at Liberty University. Eleanor was instrumental in
starting a nursing program at Liberty University. A member of District 3 Virginia
Nursing Association, she received the prestigious Akers Award in 1990 presented to an
outstanding nurse in the district. During their lives, the Treeces were also very active on
the mission fields, serving in more than 22 countries while representing numerous
mission boards.
An educator and researcher, Dr. Treece was author of Vocational Choice and
Satisfactions of Licensed Practical Nurses (1969); Internship in Nursing Education:
Technoterm (1974); and Elements of Research in Nursing (1982) which she co-authored
with her husband, and which was reprinted in Philippine and Japanese editions. Her last
book, Transpetalation: Beyond Quantitative and Qualitative Research Applied to
Multiple Sclerosis (1999), presented a conceptual model and new insight into the cause of
multiple sclerosis.
